Convincing Win For Cole Man 47 In John Deere California Juvenile

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—AUGUST 18, 2018— Cole Man 47, a Utah-bred gelding by Stel Corona, is named after special person in the lives of owners Steve and JoAnn McIntyre.

"He's named after our grandson, Cole," Steve McIntyre said. "Our grandson is a pretty good soccer player and his number is 47. That's how we got the name. He is a defender and he's absolutely quick. He's been blessed with speed."

Cole Man 47 has also been blessed with athletic ability and that talent was on display in Saturday's running of the $51,210 John Deere California Juvenile Challenge at Los Alamitos.

Owned by McIntyre and Marin Jones, Cole Man 47 led from gate to wire, crossing the finish line a length ahead of Ron Hartley's Capitol Grille. Ridden by Jesus Rios Ayala for trainer Paul Jones, Cole Man 47 covered the 350 yards in :17.575, while posting his second win in seven starts.

"We raised this horse," McIntyre added. "He's out of our mare Gm Silver Dreams. From the very beginning he's been sound. He's worked solid. Coming into tonight, he had (four) second place finishes. He's always been knocking on the door."

Cole Man 47 also competed in the Grade 2 Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity earlier this year, running seventh to the outstanding Wicked Affair in the 300-yard dash. That's the only time he's ever finished lower than second place in a race.

"We are a small outfit from Utah," McIntyre continued. "We've a lot of good friends that have been involved in horse racing and helped support us. I got involved in (Quarter Horse racing) in 1995. I've bred a couple that have done well. I bred Strike It Quick, who is the world record holder at 350 yards. We've won some (graded stakes) in Utah in 2000, but we had not won a stakes race since then."

Bred by McIntyre in partnership with Lee Giles, Strike It Quick set the 350-yard world record of :16.642 in an allowance race at Sunland Park on December 30, 2010.

A winner of 10 races in his career, the gray gelding earned $237,861. His dam, the Proudest Effort mare Dreamit, won the Grade 2 Utah Classic Futurity at Laurel Brown in 2000 while earning nearly $100,000 in her career. In addition to being the dam of Strike It Quick, Dreamit is also the granddam of Cole Man 47.

"It's my wife and I," McIntyre said. "We breed them and raise them at our house. We do everything and when they're ready, we send to a nice guy like Paul."

Cole Man 47 earned $23,557 for the win to more than double his career earnings to $45,214. With this victory Cole Man 47 earned a spot in the Grade 2 John Deere Juvenile Challenge final to be held here on Saturday, November 17.

Trained by John Cooper, Ronald Hartley's Walk Thru Fire filly Capitol Grille earned $10,242 for running second in this race.

Fastest qualifier Stevieb Flashofcash broke in and bumped at the start on the way to running third. The son of First Moonflash races for -Five Livestock Company LLC and earned $5,121.

The top three finishers were followed by KR Hi Five, Classncoronas, Allyson Wonderland, Quick To Royalty, Loan Sharky, Chasin Harm, and Fames Prize Stone.
