Three Stakes Races During Zia Weekend On Saturday Afternoon at Ruidoso Downs

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JULY 25, 2017—The Grade 3, $59,850 John Deere Ruidoso Downs Juvenile , with undefeated fastest-qualifier Runningallnight, tops three stakes races that highlight the racing action on Saturday of Zia Festival weekend at Ruidoso Downs.

The highly popular Zia Festival starts in Friday and runs through Sunday at Ruidoso Downs. There will be nine stakes races for New Mexico-breds on Sunday’s 11-race program, highlighted by the Restricted-Grade 1 $370,820 Zia Quarter Horse Futurity.

First post time is 1 p.m. on each day with free parking and free general admission.

The Zia Festival gains in popularity every year. It features more than 60 vendors and free entertainment for children.

The John Deere Ruidoso Downs Juvenile (see related story).runs as the 10th race on the 11-race program. Also on the card is the $50,000 By By JJ (6th race) and the $20,000 Bobby Dan Crenshaw (1st race).

The By By JJ shapes up as a contentious race for two-year-olds who did not qualify for Sunday’s Zia Futurity.

Bob McLure’s homebred Flashy Tres is the 7-2 morning-line favorite. The son of First Moonflash was seventh in the $373,000 Mountain Top Futurity for New Mexico-breds and came back to run a competitive third in his Zia Futurity trial. He was the odds-on favorite in that trial.

Oscar Cordova pilots Flashy Tres, a $10,000 Ruidoso sale purchase, for trainer Harvey Baeza from the eighth post position.

The Saturday program starts with the 1000-yard Bobby Dan Crenshaw Memorial, featuring thoroughbreds and quarter horse.

The quarter horse Jess A Hilbily Bone, owned by Rockin J Running Horses, won his final two starts at Remington Park before making his Ruidoso Down’s debut in the Crenshaw. At the Oklahoma City track, the Tammy Kay Johnson-trained Jess A Hilbily Bone easily won an 870-yard optional-claiming race and then took the $50,000 Remington Park Distance Handicap, also at 870 yards.

The gelding by Rock Solid Jess starts from the second post position with the second post position.
