ALTOONA, IA—AUGUST 19, 2017—Prairie Meadows near Des Moines, Iowa, opens its 2017 American Quarter Horse meet with a 10-race program on Saturday, headlined by the 400-yard, $45,000 Keokuk Stakes (G3). Post time for the first race is set for 1 p.m. (CDT).

The Fiscal Cliff, a homebred 4-year-old son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon owned by Tom Lepic of Iowa City, Iowa, is the 9-5 morning-line favorite in the Keokuk. The stallion has earned $80,933 from four starts this season, and his three stakes wins include a half-length score in the 300-yard, $50,000 Bob Moore Memorial Stakes (G2) at Remington Park on April 22.

The Fiscal Cliff drew post 2 and will be ridden by David Pinon.

Also on Saturday, 19 sophomores have been entered in two 400-yard Iowa Double Gold Derby trials. M.C. Stucks’ Damn Strait, a gelded son of Dominyun trained by Stacy Charette-Hill, drew post 9 and will be ridden by Jorge Torres in the second heat. Damn Strait is coming off of a second-place finish, a neck behind winner Born To B Bad, in the 350-yard, $67,000 Speedhorse Derby at Fair Meadows at Tulsa on July 29.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the September 2, $85,000-est. Iowa Double Gold Derby final.

Saturday’s 350-yard Iowa Double Gold Futurity trials have drawn 41 2-year-olds, headed by graded stakes winner La Vencedora. An Oklahoma-bred Ivory James filly trained by Larry Sharp for owners Jon Barley and Brant Barley, La Vencedora will be making her first start since April 22, when the filly outran her 9-1 odds to win the 330-yard, $1.002-million Remington Park Futurity (RG2) for state-breds. James Flores will ride La Vencedora from post 7 in the fifth of six trials.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the $175,000-est. Iowa Double Gold Futurity final on September 2.
