HOBBS, NM—SEPTEMBER 18, 2018—Jess Move You and Papaws Paint are among the 47 3-year-olds entered in Sunday’s 440-yard Hobbs America Derby (G3) trials at Zia Park.
A sorrel son of world champion Apollitical Jess owned by Ricardo A. Bernal and Reymundo F. Resendez, Jess Move You is coming off of a Ruidoso Downs summer campaign during which the gelding won the June 9, $759,000 Ruidoso Derby (G1) and qualified to the $802,000 Rainbow Derby (G1) and $1.239-million All American Derby (G1). The gelding drew post 5 and will be ridden by Raul Ramirez Jr. in the first of five trials.
Papaws Paint is coming off of a third-place finish, a half of a length behind winner Hotstepper, in the September 2, 440-yard All American Derby. Trained by Todd Fincher for owner RH Resources, the Pyc Paint Your Wagon gelding has earned $337,486 from 11 starts, and his seven wins include a three-quarter length victory in last year’s 400-yard, $202,000 Hobbs America Futurity (G2) at Zia Park.
Papaws Paint drew the rail post and will be ridden by Bonifacio Perez in the second heat.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the October 7, $200,000-est. Hobbs America Derby final.
