Kvn Corona Goes After 10th Consecutive Win At Los Alamitos In Super Derby On Sunday

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—NOVEMBER 10, 2018—Champion Kvn Corona looks to improve his local record to a perfect 10 for 10 when he starts from post number 10 in the Grade 1, $925,100 Los Alamitos Super Derby at 400 yards on Sunday night.

Kvn Corona enters the Super Derby following one of his best races ever at the Orange County track when scoring a ¾ length win in the fastest qualifying time of :19.67 on October 20.

Owned by Keith Nellesen of Utah, Kvn Corona won all six of his starts in 2017 on the way to being named the champion 2-year-old colt. He’s won his first three starts at Los Alamitos this year, but he did lose of two of his three starts when visiting Ruidoso Downs this past summer.

Few horses have enjoyed a double digit winning streak at Los Alamitos in the track’s 68-year history, especially in the graded stakes level that Kvn Corona has raced in during his career. The great champion filly Corona Chick, who is also the dam of KVN Corona’s sire, Corona Cartel, is the track’s record holder having won 12 consecutive starts at Los Alamitos from August 6, 1991 to August 8, 1992, while two-time distance champion Snowbound Superstar won 10 straight outings over the 5/8th of a mile Vessels Course from March 23, 2006 to September 27, 2009.

The Hall of Fame mare Charger Bar had two separate nine-race winning streaks at Los Alamitos while champions Moonist and Sign Of Lanty also posted nine-race win streaks during their peak years, all three coming up short from joining the track’s exclusive 1o-in-a-row club.

To be ridden by Ramon Sanchez for trainer Paul Jones, Kvn Corona is also looking to join his full brother Big Lew as Los Alamitos Super Derby winners. Big Lew won this race in 2016. Bred by McColee Land & Livestock LLC, Kvn Corona has won 10 of 12 career starts and earned $710,810. He won the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity and Grade 2 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity last year and the Grade 3 El Primero Del Ano Derby on March 31.

It was previously announced that Kvn Corona will enter stud in 2019, joining Big Lew as part of the stallion lineup at Lazy E Ranch in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Executive Looks is the mother of both Kvn Corona and Big Lew.

The winner of the Los Alamitos Super Derby will earn a berth to the prestigious Grade 1, $600,000 Champion of Champions to be held here on Saturday, December 15. Nine winners of the Los Alamitos Super Derby have also won the Champion of Champions with the first being the aforementioned Charger Bar. The others are Dash For Cash, Sgt Pepper Feature, Dashs Dream, First Down Dash, Dashing Folly, Wave Carver, Apollitical Jess, and Heza Dasha Fire. Incredibly, all nine of these horses were named AQHA World Champion at one point or another during their racing careers.

In addition to KVN Corona, there are five other derby winners in Sunday’s Super Derby led by Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby winner Jess My Kiss and Grade 2 Golden State Derby winner Jesstacartel. A Political Lady, winner of the Grade 3 La Primera Del Ano Derby, Moonie Blues, winner of the Grade 3 PCQHRA Breeders Derby, and Black Fryday, winner of the Governor’s Cup Derby, are the others looking for their second derby win of the year.

Owned by Mark and Peggy Brown and trained by Roman Figueroa, Jess My Kiss struggled after his 22-1 win in the Winter Derby, but he was solid when third to Eyes The Favorite their derby trial. The gelding by One Sweet Jess often flashed good quickness out of the gate, but is also prone to bumping at the start. Rodrigo Aceves piloted him for the first time in the trials and the savvy veteran rider looked like a perfect fit.

Lesley Joyner’s Jesstacartel loves the 400-yard distance and will start from post number six on Sunday, which is the same spot from where he won the Golden State on August 18 thanks to a monster late kick. Another gelding by One Sweet Jess, Jesstacartel has either won or run second in all five of his career starts at 400 yards. Cruz Mendez will be up for trainer Mark Skeen.

Ron Hartley’s Black Friday won his derby trial by a length over Lisa Anderson’s Moonie Blues after starting from post seven. He’ll move to post number two in the final and will be ridden by Eddie Garcia, this track’s all-time leading trainer. John Cooper, one of the deans of the Quarter Horse training ranks at Los Alamitos, will be looking for his second career win in this race. The venerable trainer saddled Chingaderos to victory in the 1986 running.

Parsons Ranch’s A Political Lady, who won six straight races at Los Alamitos between December 17 and July 1, will look to start a new win-streaks from post number one on Sunday. Eduardo Nicasio will pilot the Chris O’Dell-trained mare. Moonie Blues will start from post number nine and she has a great knack for running huge races on big nights. The field will be completed by Matilda Czech, second in last year’s Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity, Call Me Cole, third in last year’s Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, trial winner Eyes The Favorite, and Grade 1 finalist Sumokinintheboysroom.
