20th Running Of California Breeders Champions Night Will Take Place On Saturday

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—JULY 22, 2019—Los Alamitos Race Course will host the 20th running of California Breeders Champions Night on Saturday, July 27 featuring one of the year’s premier nights of Quarter Horse racing action.

The evening will offer a full evening of stakes racing action featuring the best California-bred Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos.

The program will be headed by the running of the $365,100 Governor’s Cup Futurity led by Cesar Nunez’s unbeaten, fastest qualifier Pitbull and Rosenthal Ranches LLC’s Runforyourlife, a full-brother to last year’s Governor’s Cup Futurity winner Powerful Favorite. Pitbull’s full-brother, a gelding named Lebowski owned by The Cream Of The Crop, Inc., will also be in action in the futurity. Eight of the 10 futurity finalists are by leading sire Favorite Cartel.

The big star among many racing in the $195,000 Governor’s Cup Derby is Powerful Favorite, who is already a two-time derby winner at Los Alamitos in 2019. Racing for Rosenthal Ranch LLC, Powerful Favorite won his derby trial and figures to be the favorite in the 400-yard race. He previously won the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby and the Grade 3 El Primero Del Ano Derby. Powerful Favorite will also look to become the eighth runner to win both the Governor’s Cup Derby and Futurity. He would also be the first to sweep the two races since Hot Hitter in 2010. The Governor’s Cup Derby field will include PCQHRA Breeders Futurity winner Cole Man 47 and Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity winner Wicked Affair.

A full card of stakes will be contested as part of Champions Night. California Breeders Champions Night, which serves as a showcase event for the finest California-bred runners in training. Featuring combined purses of approximately $950,000, the event is the product of joint cooperation between the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association and track management at Los Alamitos Race Course.

The Spencer L. Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap is the main event for 3-year-old and upward and will feature a purse of $100,000. Ed Allred’s He Looks Hot, the winner of the Spencer Childers two years ago, is among the 16 horses nominated to this year’s Spencer Childers to be contested at 400 yards. A1A Racing LLC’s Tarzanito, the 2018 AQHA champion aged stallion, and multiple stakes winners Black Fryday and Rite Regal are among the horses also nominated.

The $40,000 Matron Stakes has 15 mares nominated led by Grade 1 Charger Bar Handicap winner Thermonuclear Energy and the Grade 1 stakes placed mare Matilda Czech. Multiple stakes winner Strawfinders Jessee and 2019 stakes winners La Rusa, Time To Leave, Tough To Figure, and Just Walk By have also been nominated to the Matron at 400 yards.

Entries for the California Breeders Champions Night program will take place on Wednesday, July 24.
