Flyingforunclesam Slight Surprise In Rillito Derby Final

TUCSON, AZ—FEBRUARY 26, 2017—Kirk Goodfellow's homebred Flyingforunclesam (8-1) scored his first stakes win on Sunday with a three-quarter length upset over heavy post-time favorite Cowboys Dynasty in the $15,000 Rillito Derby at Rillito Park. Eyeaseagull finished 1¼ lengths back in the show position.

Flyingforunclesam entered the final off a second-place effort to Cowboys Dynasty in the fastest trial race on February 11. Ridden by jockey Mauro Salcedo, the gelding turned the tables on Sunday by completing the 350 yards in a quick :17.263 seconds, a 105-speed index.

It was the second win in the eight career starts for the son of second crop sire Flyingwitheagles, a brother to four-time champion Heartswideopen.

Cody Reynolds conditions the royally-bred gelding from the Takin On The Cash mare Dreams For Lyndsie, a stakes winning and multiple stakes producing half-sister to four-time champion Catchmeinyourdreams. The $8,250 Rillito Derby winners' purse more than doubled his earnings total to $13,250.

Goodfellow bred Flyingforunclesam, a $22,000 repurchase in the 2015 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, in Texas. He broke his maiden in his first career start, a trial to the 2016 Ruidoso Futurity(G1), at Ruidoso Downs.

Under jockey Jesus Osuna, AQRA-Turf Paradise Futurity winner Cowboys Dynasty rallied late but it was not enough to extend his three-race win streak. Owner/trainer Alvaro Monteverde conditions the Arizona-bred son of FDD Dynasty out of Mexican Radio by On A High.

Bred by Corner K Quarter Horses LLC, Cowboys Dynasty banked $3,000 for his second-place effort, boosting his career total to more than $40,000.

Eyeaseagull, an Arizona bred daughter of Eyeameasy, races for owner Armando Perez-Gomez and trainer Ricardo Saldana. Emilio Tapia rode the gray filly out of Miss Benton Blue, a Thoroughbred daughter of Benton Creek. She earned $1,500 for the third-palce effort.

Flyingforunclesam returned $16.20 to win, $5.60 to place and 3.60 to show. Cowboys Dynasty paid $2.80 and $2.40 and Eyeaseagull returned $4.20 to show.

Completing the field were Sniper 1, Discrete, Jessa Music, Go Seis and Lil Boom Boom.
