Shakem Bye Perry Posts Fastest Time Friday On First Day of All American Futurity Trials

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—AUGUST 18, 2017—Jose Espinoza’s emerging Shakem Bye Perry was in the right race at the right time and came through with the fastest-qualifying time in the first day of trials to the Grade 1, $3-million All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs on Friday afternoon.

The second day of trials will be on Saturday with an 11:30 a.m. first post time.

The horses with the five-fastest times from each day of 14 trials qualify to race in the iconic 440-yard All American Futurity on Labor Day. The horses with the next five-fastest times gain priority to compete in the $200,000 All American Juvenile on Labor Day.

Shakem Bye Perry raced in the sixth trial and raindrops started to fall when he left the winner’s circle. The track was listed as fast with a 4-mph tailwind. By the eighth race the track was listed as wet-fast and there was a 13-mph headwind. The track was sealed for the ninth trial.

Four of the five-fastest qualifiers came from the first six trials with the sixth trial also producing finalist Believe Me Irene. Then the fifth-fastest qualifier, Mr Secret Glory, came out of the 14th and final trial when the sun was shining on a wet-fast track.

Shakem Bye Perry impressed in his Ruidoso Downs debut after showing promise at Retama Park. The First Prize Perry gelding started on the lead and then drew out to the convincing one-and-one-quarter-length score. He was timed in :21.664 with Omar Reyes aboard for the fastest qualifying time on day 1.

The Pedro Lopez-trained Shakem Bye Perry took four starts to win his maiden and then moved up to the futurity level while finishing third in the $436,000 TQHA Sale Futurity(RG2).

"He did well at Retama," said owner Espinosa. "In the futurity, he broke last and was bumped hard. He came from last to third. We knew we had a horse that would like 440 yards."

Bred in Texas by Garlyn O. Shelton, from the Dashing Bye mare Shakem Bye, Shaem Bye Perry was a $14,000 TQHA Yearling Sale graduate.

Diamond Racing Stables’ Believe Me Irene was timed in :21.843 under Jose Enriquez and that stood up as the fourth-fastest time. Shae Cox trains the Valiant Hero-sired filly who remains a maiden with a pair of seconds and a third from three starts.

H & E Ranch, Inc. bred the brown filly in Arizona from the Mr Jess Perry mare Financial Leverage.

Martin Ybarra’s Heza Streakin Legacy won the second trial by one length in :21.795. Edwuin Lujan picked up the mount.

The son of leading sire Heza Fast Dash broke his maiden with his trial score. He was a close second in his Rainbow Futurity trial and then was a troubled eighth in the $100,000 Rainbow Juvenile.

Trainer Albert Franco saddled the Oklahoma-bred from the Streakin La Jolla mare Legacys A Streakin. Donald Friesen is the breeder.

The two fastest qualifiers on day 1 are sired by half-brothers First Prize Perry and Heza Fast Dash. Both are out of the former Broodmare of the Year First Prize Dash, a sister to all-time leading sire First Down Dash.

Hes Limitless, a royally bred son of leading sire Corona Cartel, broke his maiden in the first trial with a 1-˝ length effort under jockey Agustin Silva. From the first crop of the champion Desirio mare Pj Chick In Black, the John Stinebaugh trainee recorded the third fastest time of :21.816 seconds.

Racing for Jack Smith Farms, the brown gelding was a $105,000 repurchase in last year's Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. D. Bowen, S. Taylor and J. Smith Farms is the breeder.

Hes Limitless has complied (4) 1-2-1 record and was second in the $100,000 Rainbow Juvenile Invitational in his last start.

In the final trial Johnny Trotter's Texas homebred Mr Secret Glory defeated Dash For Stone by a neck to get the final qualifying spot at :21.854 seconds.

Ricky Ramirez had the riding call for trainer Trey Wood aboard the lightly raced son of champion and first crop sire Hez Our Secret.

Withdrawn from last year's Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale the gray gelding is out of Eye Of Gory by Mr Eye Opener. He broke his maiden in his first start, a trail for the Ruidoso Futurity, and was third in a troubled Rainbow trial In his two previous starts.
