Phantom Fury Posts Fastst Hobbs America Futurity Time After Dominating Trial Win

HOBBS, NM—SEPTEMBER 23, 2017—Off since July, Phantom Fury returned to the races with a dominating two-length win, under jockey Jose Enriquez, in the last of five trial contested for the Hobbs America Futurity(G2) at Zia Park Saturday afternoon.

The One Sweet Jess gelding's time of :19.632 seconds, a 93-speed index into a 12-mph crosswind, set the bar as the top qualifying time of the day from 39 two-year-olds who went to post.

Trainer Jesus Luis Muela saddled Phantom Fury to his first career win in four starts for owner Victor Lozano. Fourth in the West Texas Futurity(G2) in April, the Texas-bred finished third in a trial for the TQHA Sale Futurity(RG3) at Retama Park in his last start July 17th.

Bred by Eugene Therwhanger, from the Strawfly Special mare Sr Gizella, Phantom Fury has compiled a (4) 1-0-2 record and banked $22,184 this season.

Apollitical Brooke scored her third consecutive win on Saturday after a poor start under jockey Martine Felix. The daughter of leading sire Apollitical Jess hit the gate and stumbled at the start before veering out in the fourth trial (Race 9). She then surged to a one-length win to get the second fastest time of :19.873 seconds, into a 12-mph crosswind.

Racing for owners Lilly Leyba and Samantha Leyba, the Texas-bred broke her maiden at Albuquerque on July 14th after an unsuccessful campaign at Remington Park and Ruidoso Downs earlier in the year. She then won an allowance at Albuquerque in her previous start August 27th.

Ruben Leyba, Jr. conditions the brown filly out of Runaway Brooke by Brookstone Bay. Bred by Randy and Sandy Coleman, Apollitical Brooke has earned $27,352.

Champion jockey G.R. Carter, Jr. rode Flight Force to a half-length win in the opening trial to get the third fastest time of :19.952 seconds with a 9-mph tailwind.

Trainer John M. Cooper saddled the son of leading sire One Famous Eagle to his first career win in four starts for owners Joe Dee Brooks and Scott Bryant.

Bred in Oklahoma by Bobby D. Cox, Flight Force finished third in his Ruidoso Futurity trial and second in his Rainbow Futurity trial before a troubled fifth in his prior start, a trial for the All American Futurity. He is out of the stakes producing Strawfly Special mare Modice.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to Zia Park on Sunday, October 9th to vie for the winner's share of $250,000-est. purse going 400 yards.
