LOS ALAMITOS, CA--MARCH 14, 2018--Legacy Ranch’s Wicked Affair posted the fastest clocking from the 38 2-year-olds that posted gate drills on Tuesday morning. Trained by Terry Knight, Wicked Affair covered the 220 yards in :12.3.

The homebred filly is by One Sweet Jess and out of Burr Cold, a two-time allowance winner at Los Alamitos during her 10-race career. Burr Cold’s dam is Tender Flyer, a stakes winner of over $68,000. It’s in the breeding shed that Tender Flyer has made the most impact. She is the mother of Flying Fig, the champion 2-year-old filly in 2010.

Flying Fig earned $806,920 in her racing career while finishing second in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, Ed Burke Million Futurity, and Golden State Million Futurity. Tender Flyer is also the dam of stakes winners Visual Man and California Eagle and of Platki, who posted the fastest qualifying time to the Ed Burke Million Futurity last year. This is also the family of Ed Burke Memorial Futurity winner Heza Secret Diamond.

There were five 2-year-olds that recorded :12.4 clockings on Tuesday headed by the Monty Arrossa-trained duo of Budbreak and Stevieb Flashofcash, a pair of Los Alamitos Equine Sale graduates.

Purchased for $22,000, Budbreak is a gelding by FDD Dynasty and out of Paint Your Beau. A daughter of Pyc Paint Your Wagon, Paint Your Beau broke her maiden at first asking over a field that included Grade 1 winner A Toss Up in 2011.

Paint Your Beau would later run sixth to Mighty B Valiant in the Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Futurity and second in the King William Handicap at Retama Park in 2013. She also won an allowance race at Will Rogers Downs. Budbreak is from the family of Ruidoso Futurity winner Okey Dokey Fantasy ($576,521), Fast Debonair ($455,658) and 2004 Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes winner Royal Medallion.

Budbreak worked alongside the Utah-bred Stevieb Flashofcash, a gelding by First Moonflash and out of Lds Good Goin Gracie. Owned by Five Livestock Company LLC, Stevie B Flashofcash is a half-brother to LDS Dash For Dylan, a horse that also won the Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes. A tall gelding, LDS Dash For Dylan won 12 races and $417,432 in his career and a Grade 1 stakes winner. He was second in the Go Man Go Handicap and third in the Los Alamitos Invitational Championship – both Grade 1 events. Lds Good Goin Gracie is also the dam of the stakes winner Sfr Stuck On You.

Tom Bradbury’s I Like My Chances also worked 220 yards in :12.40. Trained by Paul Jones, the Colorado-bred colt is by Corona Cartel and out of 2007 La Primera Del Ano Derby winner Fancys First Affair, who began her career with four straight wins and finished with $102,745 in lifetime earnings.

The Elena Andrade-trained Habits Secrets also recorded :12.4 clocking, as did Harem Bar Cartel for trainer Danny Montes. Harem Bar Cartel is a colt by AQHA champion 2-year-old colt Five Bar Cartel and out of the unraced mare Harem Carver.

The broodmare is extremely well bred. She is out of multiple Grade 1 stakes placed mare Special Queen Sa, the runner-up in the Ed Burke Memorial Futurity in 2002 and Golden State Derby in 2003. Special Queen Sa’s dam is Queen Of Appeals, the mother of (G1) Champion of Champion and (G1) Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity winner Good Reason SA and (G1) Southern California Derby winner Jabuti Eagle SA.

Michelle and Jeff Cravens’ Stels Thor is among the six runners with a :12.5 clocking. The Stel Corona colt is out of the winning mare Nimble, who earned nearly $40,000 in her racing career. This female family traces back to Ed Allred’s blue-hen producer of champions Oh La Proud, the dam of champions Hawkinson, Hawkish, and Flame N Flash. Trained by James Glenn, Jr., Stels Thor worked alongside stablemate Top Rock Jorge, who also worked the 220 yards in :12.5.

The Juan Aleman-trained Mitey Phantom, a Texas-bred filly by First Moonflash and out of Neons Miracle, is another of the talented freshman to work in :12.5 on Tuesday morning. Mitey Phanthom is a full sister to Mitey Moon, the winner of the $289,000 New Mexico Classics Futurity winner at Zia Park in 2013, and to Mitey Man, the winner of the 2016 New Mexico-Breds Futurity at Albuquerque.

Mitey Man, a winner of over $180,000, also finished third in the New Mexico Classic Futurity and in the 2017 Zia Park Derby.

Sad Face Emoji, a colt by Favorite Cartel and out of the solid producer Tahma Hawk, posted a :12.5 for trainer Jose Flores when working alongside the aforementioned Harem Bar Cartel. Tahma Hawk is the dam of All American Futurity finalist Crooked Path, who is a full-sister to Sad Face Emoji, and California Breeders Freshman Stakes winner Stel Hawk.

Tahma Hawk, who earned over $38,000 in her career, is also the mother of Grade 3 Valley Junction Futurity winner Oldsmobile Hill and the stakes placed Tahma Hawk Chop.

The two others to work in :12.5 were El Oh El, a Colorado-bred filly by Apollitical Jess and out of the stakes placed mare Cute Ivory Girl, and Nacho Binez, an Indiana-bred gelding sired by Habits Secret and out of Chikita Especial. Trained by Elena Andrade, Nacho Binez partnered Habits Secret in their workout.

The six freshman to record :12.6 works on Tuesday were: Texting, an Ed Allred-owned colt by One Sweet Jess out of Sex On Fire; Paddy Riley, an Oklahoma-bred colt by Apollitical Jess; Ms KO, a filly by Corona Cartel out of the stakes winner Whatta Knockout, who worked alongside an unnamed colt by Royaltys Choice; and the duo of Coleman 47 and Propagandist, who worked as a tandem to close out the morning’s drills.

The broodmare Whatta Knockout is a winner of $65,588 and the mother of 2017 Governor’s Cup Futurity finalist Knockout Jess. Whatta Knockout won the Anaheim Handicap and Secret Card Handicap in 2010 and finished third to Stylish Jess Br in the Grade 1 Charger Bar Handicap in 2011. Coleman 47 is out of GM Silver Dreams, who produced Ruidoso Futurity trial winner Miz Good Friday, while Propagandist is an Oklahoma-bred by champion Tempting Dash and out of the unraced mare Ali Cartel.
