Eyesa Special Cirrus Prevails in Second Half of the Dan Lockie Overnight Derby Stakes

MILES CITY, MT—MAY 19, 2018—Despite a mid-pack start and traffic on both sides, Eyesa Special Cirrus prevailed as the winner in the second of two divisions of the $7,500 Dan Lockie Overnight Derby Stakes (not black-type) at Miles City on Saturday.

Eyesa Special Cirrus ($4.60) and jockey Luis Peralta posted a final time of 18.872 for the 350-yard event. Peralta also won the first division of the Dan Lockie Overnight Derby Stakes with A Toast to Brindis.

Trained by Jesse Villegas for owner Steve Day, Eyesa Special Cirrus won for the fifth time in eight career starts. The Eyesa Special Slim gelding has earned $20,626 to date, including a win in a division of the Wyoming All Breed Futurity last fall and a second-place finish in the Bucking Horse Sale Futurity last May in Miles City.

Eyesa Special Cirrus was bred in Wyoming by Broken Bones Cattle Company out of the First N Six mare Lil Shameless Angel.

Villegas also trained the second-place finisher, Tanquery Dash. Tanquery Dash, with Shaunda Larsen aboard, finished a half-length behind the winner and a neck in front of third-place finisher Movin Speckled Hocks.

Gerald Kaul owns and bred the gelding in Wyoming, by Brindis Por Cayenne and out of the stakes winning mare Dashin Dashetta, by Dashin Moon Shadow.

Movin Speckled Hocks and Gonzalo Valles, Jr finished third for trainer Robby Overturf and owner Jess Matt. The filly was bred in Idaho by W. Dean and Colleen Graham, sired by First Prize Stone and out of Proud Speckled Hock, by Dustys Best Effort.

In lieu of trials for the Dan Lockie Derby, Miles City split entries into two overnight stakes on Saturday. Trials were originally scheduled but were canceled due to track conditions.

Completing the field were My Mistress Boots and Kr Temptrus. Minnies Express was scratched.
