FREDERICKSBURG, TX—JULY 21, 2018—The lightly raced Stoli Spirit broke his maiden Saturday afternoon when he defeated Kk Perrys Policy by a nose in the last of two trials contested for the G.C.F.A. 79 or Under Speed Index Sprint trials at the Gillespie County Fair Ground.
Jockey Eliazar Vera guided the Stoli 3-year-old to the top qualifying time of :17.401 seconds over the 330 yard course. Arturo Morales saddled the bay gelding to his first win in only his third career start for owner Jorge Navarro.
Bred in Texas by Garlyn O. Shelton, from the Special Leader mare Unshaken Leader, Stoli Sprint entered the trials off a fourth-place effort in the Sam Houston Maiden Classic trials on March 30. Prior to that his only start at 2 was an off-the-board performance in the 2017 All American Futurity trials at Ruidoso Downs.
Kk Perrys Policy, under jockey Luis Vivanco, held on to the second fastest clocking of :17.416 seconds. John Sharp Jr. owns-and-trains the 3-year-old Chickie Cherry Cola gelding from the Mr Jess Perry mare Mochalatta. Scott Friesenhahn is the breeder.
My First Real Cartel, a 3-year-old son of Real Cartel, broke his maiden in the first trial with a nose win over Dashel to get the fourth fastest time of :17.457 seconds. Jose Herbert had the riding call for trainer Fernando Chavez for owner Rolando Guerra. Santana Gutierrez bred the brown gelding in Texas from the Jody O Toole mare Browns Petite.
The 10 fastest qualifiers from today's two trial races will return to the Gillespie County Fairgrounds on Sunday, August 12, to vie for the winner's share of a $17,500 purse.
