LOS ALAMITOS, CA—APRIL 19, 2019—The outstanding broodmare Terrific Energy was well represented during morning workouts at Los Alamitos Race Course, as three of her foals posted 220-yard gate drills on Thursday.

Her babies included the Separate Interest filly Tea Pod, who posted the morning’s co-fastest work of :12.20, the Walk Thru Fire filly Terra Fire, who worked in :12.30, and the Parsons Rock filly Geothermal, who covered the distance in a time of :12.80. All three are trained by Chris O’Dell.

Terrific Energy is one of the most prolific broodmares in Quarter Horse racing. Her sons and daughters include 2019 Grade 1 Charger Bar Handicap winner Thermonuclear Energy, a five-time stakes winning mare with earnings of $383,757, 2019 Grade 3 La Primera Del Año Derby winner Terrific First Down, and Terrific Synergy, winner of the 2012 Governor’s Cup Derby.

Terrific Energy is also the dam of stakes winner Dynasty Energy and Designs By Dynasty. On the racetrack, Terrific Energy won the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap and Grade 1 Charger Bar Handicap in 2009.

Tea Pod and Terra Fire worked together on Thursday with Tea Pod the quicker of the two and Terra Fire appearing the more physically imposing. Geothermal, meanwhile, reared a bit as the gates opened for her work and was far back early on. She finished with a ton of interest and certainly one to watch in her debut.

Geothermal’s workmate in this drill is Budderlicous, who flew to a super time of :12.20. The Utah-bred gelding by Corona Cartel is out of Budder Think Twice, a three-time winner in her racing career who qualified to the 2015 Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity and was second to Phoebes Dynasty in the Restricted Grade 1 Governor’s Cup Futurity. Budder Think Twice earned $134,745. Budderlicous is among the first foals of racing age for Budder Think Twice.

• Tempting First Dash (:12.3) Texas-bred filly by Shining First Down and out of A Tempting Chick, who was the AQHA champion broodmare in 2009. In her career, A Tempting Chick has produced 2009 AQHA champion 2-year-old Tempting Dash ($673,970), who was perfect four for four in his career while winning the Grade 1 Dash For Cash Futurity and Grade 1 Texas Classic Futurity. She is also the dam of A Temping Dash ($541,949), winner of the 2009 Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby and 2010 Grade 1 Go Man Go Handicap and Restricted Grade 1 Spencer Childers Championship Handicap. A Tempting Dash finish second in the Champion of Champions in 2010. As for the sire Shining First Down, he was a tremendous runner who qualified to four major Los Alamitos futurities in 2019. Second in that year’s Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity and Governor’s Cup Futurity, Shining First Down earned over $420,000 in his career.

• Remember To Walk (:12.3) California-bred filly by Walk thru Fire and out of the unraced mare Remember The Cartel, who is the dam of Eos Corona N Chicks ($43,384) and Separate Cartel ($65,976), who competed in the 2012 Texas Classic Derby.
• Apollitical Spell (:12.3) California-bred filly by Apollitical Jess and out of Chalalita, whose first foals are 2-year-olds this year. In addition to Apollitical Spell, she’s the dam of two foals by Apollitical Blood. Chalalita earned $77,395 in her career, which included seven graded stakes races.

• One Royal Moonlight (:12.5) California-bred filly by One Famous Eagle and out of Mesa Moonlight. One Famous Eagle enjoyed a decorated career at Los Alamitos, winning the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and Los Alamitos Super Derby. Mesa Moonlight won the 2014 La Pacifica Handicap and won her trial to the 2013 Rainbow Futurity.

• With Vigor (:12.5) California-bred colt by Favorite Cartel and out of Coronas Rouge, who was finalist for the 2006 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity. She’s the dam of Energetic, the third place finisher in the 2017 Way Maker Handicap, and Red Dasher, the fifth place finisher in the 2011 Kindergarten Futurity. Later in that year, Red Dasher ran second in the Blink Of An Eye Handicap at 100 yards. Coronas Rouge is also the mother of 2017 La Primera De Año qualifier Red And Ready.
