OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—APRIL 20, 2019—His owner said Johnny de Capo's first race in Louisiana showed how green his 2-year-old colt was, losing by six lengths, but he made up for it Saturday night by showering Juan Contreras with a truckload of green in cash, winning the Restricted Grade 1, $825,210 Remington Park Futurity.

The toteboard said 11-1 odds but the longshot was more than up to the task in the featured race for Oklahoma-bred 2-year-olds, on a racing program that paid out more than $1.7 million in purse money. If you're someone who credits jockeys with winning races, Johnny de Capo would have gotten plenty of consideration. Jockey Gaspar Garcia is one of the track's top percentage jockeys, if not the best.

Coming into Saturday's races, Garcia had made 12 starts and finished either first or second in eight of those tries. He did not disappoint on Johnny de Capo, breaking second out of the gate, just behind Chilitos, who faded to sixth, but Garcia's mount just kept going, hitting the finish line a head in front of Lota Shakin Goin On, the second-fastest qualifier in the trials. That horse was a neck in front of third-place finisher Uptowne Babe, the fastest qualifier and the post-time wagering favorite at 2-1 odds.

"He broke out a little bit at the start," said Garcia, "but he picked up ground very quickly. He then started drifting out some but by that point we were too far in front."

Johnny de Capo, a 2-year-old colt by Capo de Capi, out of the Make It Anywhere mare Dash for Ted, is trained by Oscar Nunez and owned by Contreras of Irving, Texas. He was bred in Oklahoma by the owner.

Johnny de Capo had won his trial with ease, drawing off to win by two lengths and was just as impressive in the finals, earning $289,975 for the victory. After only three races in his young career, he has a bankroll of $298,763. All of this success after Johnny de Capo was beaten six lengths in his debut at Louisiana Downs on March 2.

"He was a little green in Louisiana," said Contreras. "But he had a good training race there and looked good training up to his Remington Park races. I'm thankful to God and all my family and the barn for its support of this horse."

Johnny de Capo paid $24.60 to win, $11.20 to place and $5.60 to show. His time of 16.954 for 330 yards over a fast track was good enough for an 85 speed index.

Fastest qualifier Lota Shakin Goin On boosted his career earnings to nearly $150,000 from only two career starts. Champion jockey Ricky Ramirez had the riding assignment aboard the son of leading third-crop sire sire Lota Pyc.

Gerald Reed saddled the bay gelding for himself and co-owner Whiting Ranch. Bred by Reed Land & Cattle Co. LLC, Lota Shakin Goin On is out of the Corona Caliente mare DM Hot Hot Hot.

The royally-bred Uptowne Babe, a sister to Ruidoso Futurity(G1) winner Uptown Dynasty, picked up $90,773 for third. Guillermo Valdivia trains the Mr Jess Perry filly out of the FDD Dynasty mare Ms Southern Dynasty for owner/breeder Sam W. Green. Rolando Raudales was riding.

A Tres Of Sign, Celebriti, Chilitos, Lairliar Hocksonfire and Relentless Jessie completed the field. Daisy Cakes and Tren de Carga were both scratched.

There is no racing Sunday, due to the Easter holiday. The next live card at Remington Park will be Thursday, April 25 at 6 p.m.
