Dtl Samureye Wins Second Stakes In A Row, Taking Mister Lewie Memorial

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MAY 17, 2019—Even without two-time defending champion Painted Turnpike in the race, there was tension-filled anticipation of the matchup between DTL Samureye and track-record holder Ima Real Livewire in this year's edition of the Grade 1, $35,700 Mister Lewie Memorial at Remington Park on Friday night.

DTL Samureye had upset multiple World Champion Painted Turnpike in the $20,000 Paul Harber Memorial Stakes for Paints and Appaloosas, on April 12, winning by 1-1/4 lengths in a visually impressive win. Ima Real Livewire was equally incredible in the Grade 1, $48,200 American Paint Derby on April 27. His time of 19.32 seconds for 400 yards shattered the track record set by Major Tom (19.414) set on April 19, 2014.

DTL Samureye proved to be the most impressive on Friday night, winning the Mister Lewie by 1-1/4 lengths over Bully Pulpit. Ima Real Livewire ran third, 2-1/2 lengths behind the winner.

Jockey Jesse Levario was in the irons for Almada Racing of San Antonio, Texas, and trainer Josue Ponce.

"He ran good," Levario said. "I think getting the last race under his belt helped. I hoped he would get a good start. After that there was nothing I could do. The horse did it all himself. He just keeps getting smarter. He used to have trouble in the gates but the last two he's been fine."

It was DTL Samureye's sixth win in a row, five of those stakes races. There wasn't much chance of challenging that track record at 400 yards that Ima Real Livewire set because there was a ferocious 17 mph headwind coming up the track most of the night. He stopped the timer in 19.692 seconds over a fast track. On the night Ima Real Livewire set the record, he had a 12 mph tailwind to aid his efforts.

This 4-year-old gelded Paint, is a son of SF Royal Quick Flash, out of the Mr Eye Opener (QH) mare Eysa Savvy Queen. He was bred in Oklahoma by Dean & Tonya Lester.

DTL Samureye won $21,312 for his Mister Lewie score and now has a record of 14 starts, nine wins and three seconds for a lifetime bankroll of $112,577. He hasn't lost in more than a year when he ran second in the American Paint Derby last year at Remington Park on April 28. Bully Pulpit won that night. DTL Samureye improved his record at 400 yards to four wins in five tries.

The Mister Lewie Memorial is named in honor of late trainer Lewis Wartchow of Fitzhugh, Okla. Wartchow, an Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Fame Member, was known as the "King of Paints" for his dominance with Paint horses throughout his career. Equally successful with Appaloosas, Wartchow passed away in 2003.

Sooner 6ix Hit

The Sooner 6ix was hit on Friday night by one perfect ticket with all six races correctly selected. The numbers of 6-2-1-2-6/9-1 yielded a payoff of $36,032.14 to the winning ticket holder. That is the largest Sooner 6ix payoff for this season at Remington Park.

Racing continues Saturday with a special post time of Noon to coincide with racing at Pimlico in Baltimore that will include the second jewel of the Triple Crown as 13 horses go to post in the Preakness Stakes.
