Foose Secret Fastest in Roche Equine Veterinary Services Derby Trials at Jerome

JEROME, ID—JUNE 9, 2019—A pair of trials on Sunday afternoon produced the qualifying field for the $7,000-Added Roche Equine Veterinary Services Derby.

The 350-yard final will be held on June 23.

The two fastest qualifiers were the top two finishers in the first trial. Foose Secret posted the fastest overall time as the winner by a neck over Racies Favorite.

Foose Secret ($6.60) and jockey Jesus Valenzuela were gate-to-wire winners and earned a time of 17.510 and a 106 speed index. The gelded son of Foose is trained by Farrol Cunningham for owner Jorge Murillo.

Foose Secret was bred in California by Roque Gonzalez, out of the No Secrets Here mare Beauty Secrets. The trial was his first start outside of Los Alamitos; though he had three second-place finishes in nine starts in California, he did not break his maiden until Sunday’s trial.

Racies Favorite and Jose Figueroa were just a neck behind Foose Secret as the post-time favorite. The pair separated themselves from the rest of the pack by nearly three lengths.

As the second fastest qualifier, Racies Favorite posted a time of 17.560 and earned a 105 speed index. The filly is trained by Monty Arrossa for owners Denny and Sandy Weigt. She was bred in California by Steve Burns, DVM, by Favorite Cartel and out of Miss Racy Racie, by Separatist; Miss Racy Racie is out of multiple graded stakes winner Miss Racy Vike.

Racies Favorite competed in trials for the Ed Burke Million and Kindergarten in 2018 and broke her maiden in July at Los Alamitos. She was second in her most recent start, an allowance at Pocatello in May.

Pickle Dilly, winner of the second trial, was the third fastest qualifier with a time of 17.823. Leonardo Gonzalez and Pickle Dilly broke on top and maintained their lead to a victory by a neck at the wire to earn a 97 speed index.

Pickle Dilly ($7.40) is trained by Jarrett Mills; David Merritt owns and bred the son of The Louisiana Cartel. He is out of Dilligass, by A Regal Choice.

Sunday’s trial was the third career win in nine starts for Pickle Dilly, who was the 2018 winner of the $21,000 Idaho Cup Futurity at Sandy Downs last summer.
