Determined Cowboy Goes Wire-to-Wire In Granite Mountain QH Futurity

PRESCOTT, AZ—JULY 20, 2019—Fastest qualifier Determined Cowboy bore out under jockey Martin Osuna Saturday afternoon but held well to get a half-length win over Pollitical Blood in the $27,050 Granite Mountain Quarter Horse Futurity at Arizona Downs.

It was the first stakes win and third victory in four starts for the son of leading first-crop sire Hes Relentless. Determined Cowboy completed the 350 yard course in :17.932 seconds, a 97 speed index into a 10 mph crosswind.

Armando Castellanos conditions the Oklahoma-bred gelding for owner Valerie Melissa Velazquez. Bred by Jon Mixer and Dan Ward, from the Western Challenge (TB) mare Shes Western, Determined Cowboy picked up $14,8778 to boost his bankroll to $21,315.

Trainer Havid Canez saddled runner-up Pollitical Blood for owner Juan Clark. The Louisiana-bred son of first-crop sire Apollitical Blood was ridden by jockey Michael Ybarra. An $8,200 Heritage Place Yearling Sale graduate, Pollitical Blood is out of the Gold Regent(TB) mare Rita Regent. He earned $5,410 for the effort.

Joel Tellez' Wr Jokers R Wild finished a head back in third to pick up $2,705. Angel Hernandez Dominguez trains the Kanas-bred son of Fantastic Corona Jr from the Gol mare Ja Desert Flight. Jesus Osuna had the riding call and Robert David Morris is the breeder.

Completing the field were Jessapolitical Guy, Scandalous Dasher, Apollitical Run, Two More Shots and Survivour. I Roll Like That and Lsglory were scratched.
