Apollitical Queen Rallies To Win Polk County Derby

ALTOONA, IA—OCTOBER 12, 2019—Second fastest qualifier Apollitical Queen rallied under jockey Brett Birzer to get a head in front of Jimy Bufet in the $80,000 Polk County Derby at Prairie Meadows Saturday night. Cr Lil Bro was another head back in the blanket finish for third.

Conditioned by trainer Alex Wessels, Apollitical Queen completed the 400 yards in :19.763 seconds, equaling a 95 speed index into a 10 mph crosswind, as the post-time favorite. It was the second stakes win for Saturday's card for Wessels who also saddled Real Wagon to victory in the Terrace Hill.

Racing for owner B/B Wessels LLC, the daughter of leading sire Apollitical Jess has compiled an (8) 4-2-1 record and tonight's purse valued at $36,000 doubled her earnings mark to $78,197. Bred in Iowa by Kirk Wessels, the sorrel filly is out of Heros Queen by Valiant Hero.

Tom Wellington saddled runner-up Jimy Bufet for owners John Lawless and Joe Morgan. Craig Kirby bred the FDD Dynasty gelding form the Southern Cartel mare Cartels Belle. Ridden by David Brown, Jimy Bufet earned $14,400 to increase his mark to just under $30,000.

Richard and Curt Tobin's homebred Cr Lil Bro picked up $8,000 for finishing third. Jason Olmstead trains the Pyc Paint Your Wagon gelding out of LW Evening LaJolla by Streakin La Jolla. Berkley Packer was aboard.

Fastest qualifier High Time To Fly finished fourth followed by Ja Go Forest Go, Lil Quick Wagon and Rowdy Anywhere. Fire Up Ado B, Shesa Favorite Girl and Streakin Jesszee were all scratched.
