HOBBS, NM—OCTOBER 13, 2019—With a strong rally under jockey Jaime Leos, Flying Famous Eagle got up at odds of 25-1 to defeat Sacred Nation by a head the $229,160 Grade 2 Hobbs America Futurity Sunday afternoon at Zia Park.
Saddled by trainer Mario Fernandez, Flying Famous Eagle completed the 400 yards in :19.734 seconds, equaling a 93 speed index into a 6 mph headwind, to get his first career win in five starts.
A $51,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale graduate, the son of leading sire One Famous Eagle races for owner Sergio Hermosillo. Johnny Trotter bred the brother to champion and leading first-crop sire Hes Relentless in Texas from the Strawfly Special mare This Dreams Flying. Flying Famous Eagle earned $109,997 for the win.
Runner-up Sacred Nation, a California-bred son of leading sire Favorite Cartel, races for owner Link Newcomb and trainer Todd Fincher. Champion jockey Ricky Ramirez rode the brown gelding out of Tahma Hawk by Hawkinson. Bred by Steve D Burns, Sacred Nation earned $36,665 to boost his earnings to $46,430.
Mi Apollitical Jess finished half-a-length back to earn $18,906 for third. Wesley Giles conditions the homebred son of leading sire Apollitical Jess for owner-breeder Marty Neugebauer. Alan Hernandez was riding the Colorado-bred gelding out of Mi Pequena Amor by First Down Dash. He has banked $25,186 this year.
Completing the Hobbs America field were Apollitical Papa, Cers Final Try, Eyesa Forrest, Portfolioh, Political Mayhem and Apollitical B Brioso.
