OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—FEBRUARY 14, 2020—Up until the seventh training race of 11, winning speed indexes were hovering in the 50s and 60s during Valentine’s Day activity at Remington Park. However, when Tres Coronas hit the track under jockey Eddie Sanchez, he blasted a field of eight with an 83 speed index.

The Jose Sanchez III trainee, a 2-year-old American Quarter Horse son of World Champion sire Corona Cartel, covered the 250 yards in training race seven in a time of 13.440 seconds into a 13 mph headwind.

The fastest time of the previous six training races was 13.803 for a 68 speed index. The juvenile colt by the late, great Corona Cartel, out of the Tres Seis mare Baja Jazz, broke sharply from the gate and was two lengths ahead of the field before the halfway mark. At the finish line he had drawn away to a four-length victory.

Sanchez bases out of Retama Park in San Antonio and believes Tres Coronas will ship back to Oklahoma City for the trials in Remington Park’s Oklahoma Futurity. Juan is 25 years old and his brother, Eddie, 21, rose Tres Coronas. The colt is owned by Juan A. Medina of Zapata, Texas, south of Laredo.

“He’s nominated to the Oklahoma Futurity and then we’ll take him straight to Ruidoso Downs from there,” Jose Sanchez III said. “We have no plans to keep him here for the Heritage Place Futurity at this time.”

Sanchez III won the Grade 1 Texas Classic Futurity on Nov. 9 last year at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas, with Trump My Record. As a 2-year-old, Trump My Record, a bay gelding by Apollitical Blood, out of the PYC Paint Your Wagon mare Breck N Records, won 8-of-10 starts and earned a 107 speed index in the Texas Classic Futurity. His earnings for 2019 were $791,153.

Sanchez said it would be difficult to compare Tres Coronas to Trump My Record off of just one training race, but he has his fingers crossed.

“Some horses run great in training races and then don’t in the real thing,” he said. “But that was pretty impressive into a 13 mph head wind.”

Tres Coronas’ sire, Corona Cartel, was the all-time leading living sire of money earners at the time of his passing on Dec. 18, 2019, with runners that had earned more than $63 million. He now is the No. 2 all-time leading sire of money earners, only behind First Down Dash.

The Friday training races were conducted over a fast track under sunny skies with temperatures in the mid-40s, facing a southerly headwind between 10-15mph.
