OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—APRIL 5, 2020—An undefeated filly, Fernweh, and the 2019 All American Futurity(G1) winner, Mr Jess Jenkins, were the two fastest qualifiers in the trials Sunday for the restricted Grade 2, $268,700 Remington Park Derby.

Fernweh, trained by Blane Wood, posted the quickest time at 400 yards, stopping the timer in :19.624 over a fast surface, earning a 92 speed index. Mr Jess Jenkins was the second-fastest at :19.780 and 88. The finals are scheduled for these 3-year-old American Quarter Horses on Saturday, April 18. The Remington Park Derby is restricted to eligible Oklahoma-breds.

Fernweh won her third in a row to start her career for owner Rusty Allred of Graham, Texas. This 3-year-old daughter of Favorite Cartel, out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Lil Bit More, began her career at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico where she won the $1 million Ruidoso Downs Futurity(G1) last year on June 9 after winning her trial by open daylight, 2-¾ lengths.

She is now three-for-three lifetime with earnings of $433,638. She won $8,838 of the trial purse of $15,000 on Sunday.

AQHA Racing champion jockey Ricky Ramirez has been in the saddle for all three of Fernweh’s wins. She was bred in Oklahoma by Bobby Cox.

Making his first start since winning the Grade 2 Southwest Juvenile Invitational Championship(G2) on December 1, Mr Jess Jenkins kicked off the opening trial with an impressive one-length winning effort for owner Jose Guzman and Rio Sosa. The winner of last year's $3 million All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs ran his win-streak to four straight.

V.H. Harman Jr. and Robert Moudy III bred the son of leading sire Apollitical Jess in Oklahoma from the Dashing Cleat mare Fetching Image. He has compiled a (7) 4-0-0 record and banked $1,584,964. Champion jockey James Flores was riding.

Also making his 3-year-old debut was Jesse D, a son of multiple stakes sire Jess Louisiana Blue, who was third in the Grade 1 $963,100 Heritage Place Futurity last year. Under jockey Jimmy Dean Brooks the sorrel gelding defeated Relentless Jessie by 1-¾ lengths to get the third fastest clocking of :19.862 seconds, into a 12 mph headwind.

Eddie D. Willis conditions the Larry Rice owned gelding out of Sonny D by Tempting Dash. Flag Ranch LLC bred the $164,896 earner. His last start was a fourth-place finish in the Dash For Cash Futurity(G2) October 5, 2019 at Lone Star Park.

Sunday’s five trials were conducted under mostly sunny skies, into a southerly headwind ranging from 10-13mph.

Remington Park racing is scheduled to resume, with no public spectators, Thursday through Saturday, April 9-11 with a nightly first post time of 6 p.m.-Central. Next week is a three-day race week with no racing on Easter Sunday.

The Paul Harber Memorial, for older Paints and Appaloosas is featured on Friday night with a field of nine. DTL Samureye, winner of the race in 2019, is back to defend his title. Also returning, for the first time since the Paul Harber a year ago, is all-time leading Paint earner Painted Turnpike who has made $463,836 in his career.
