OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MAY 22, 2020—It has been a week for trainers shooting up the trainers’ standings at Remington Park like bottle rockets; Pedro Martinez is the latest to do so with three wins Friday night, all at 250 yards.

How is this for perfection? Martinez’s three winners were the only three horses he sent to the gate to race Friday night.

The three wins sent Martinez from tied for 23rd in the standings, going into Friday’s card, all the way up to a tie for 11th. He moved from five wins from 23 starters to eight wins from 26 starters.

His winners Friday night came in race two with Southard Regard, race seven with JK Pistol Petey, and race nine with Ancestrall. Jockey Josh Romero won with Martinez’s first winner of the night and Jose Vega had his picture taken in the winner’s circle aboard the other two. Romero had a riding triple on Friday. He won the first two races on the card with Martinez’s horse, Peves Candy Chickman in race one and Paint Me Tres in the nightcap, the 11th race, paying $21 on that winner.

Southard Regard broke her maiden in her fifth career try as a 4-year-old mare by Chicks Regard, out of the Strawfly Special mare Southard Style Lady. She had previously only been in the money in one try, a third-place finish at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla. She is owned by Jo Rice of Pryor, Okla., and was bred by the owner.

Southard Regard was sent off as the 2-1 wagering favorite in the race for maiden claimers and drew away to an easy 1-1/2 lengths victory from the outside 10-hole. Southard Regard paid $6, $3.60 and $2.20 across the board. The mare stopped the timer for 250 yards in 13.316 seconds, over a muddy track, for an 88 speed index.

Martinez’s second winner was also the 2-1 favorite in his race, JK Pistol Petey taking another 250-yard battle, this one for $10,000 claimers. This gray, gelded 4-year-old son of Jodys Money Pop, out of the Okey Dokey Dale mare First Down Bunny, got to the wire a neck ahead of Some Value in 13.075 seconds for an impressive 97 speed index. He is owned by Phillis Jones and Bruce Key of Paoli, Okla. and also bred by his owners.

JK Pistol Petey paid $6.40, $4, and $3.60 to win, place and show.

Martinez’s final winner of the night was Ancestrall, taking his 250-yard sprint in 13.197 seconds for a 92 speed index. This 4-year-old gelding by Captain Courage, out of the Corona Cartel mare All N the Jeans, is owned by Pete Horton and Misty Parsons Leger of Nocona, Texas, and was bred in Oklahoma by Bobby Cox.

Ancestrall was nearly the favorite, at 5-2 odds, and won by a head, returning $7, $3.20, and $3 across the board. The 9-5 favorite, SFS Blood Rush, ran second. The final win for Martinez left him one victory behind Carlos Ruiz in 10th place, who has nine wins. Eddie Willis continues to lead in the standings with 33 victories, eight more than any other trainer.

Romero moved up to 13th in the jockeys’ standings with 12 wins. James Flores is running away with his third riding title in a row at Remington Park with 58 trips to the winner’s circle.
