Jettz Tops Saturday's $1-Million Grade 1 Ruidoso Futurity Trials, Field Set After Two Days of Trials

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—MAY 23, 2020—Jettz, a half-brother AQHA Racing Champion Distance Horse Wahoo, broke his maiden Saturday while posting the top qualifying time on day 2 for the $1-Million Grade 1 Ruidoso Futurity at Ruidoso Downs.

The five fastest qualifiers, from Friday's 14 trials, and the five fastest qualifiers, from today's (Saturday) 14 trials, will face off in the first-leg of the Ruidoso Triple Crown on Sunday, June 7. They will vie for the winner's share of the million-dollar Grade 1 futurity purse, valued at $420,000.

Ridden by jockey Francisco Calderon, Jettz got his first win in three starts by defeating Packsaddle Senator in the second trial. The son of leading first-crop sire One Fabulous Eagle was clocked in :17.818 seconds, an 86 speed index into a 13 mph headwind to set the top mark.

"He broke so sharp that we were in front quickly, and I think that gave a young horse the confidence to keep going," Calderon said. "The ten-horse came back on us a little bit, but my horse wasn't going to let him get ahead. The gelding acts like an older horse. He certainly will be able to use more ground later."

Racing for owner-breeder Bobby D. Cox and trainer John Buchanan, Jettz finished third in his career debut on May 4 to qualify for the $891,900 Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity(RG1). He was a close fifth in a blanket finish to the April 18th final earning $62,433 for the effort.

"He's so big he looks more like an 870 horse, but here we are at 350 yards," Buchanan said. "He's really starting to get the hang of it. Those two races at Remington Park before we came to Ruidoso really made a big difference because he got settled in and used to things. He's a real big horse and now he's sort of growing into himself."

Jettz second dam is the stakes winner and former Broodmare of the Year Fitting Celebration, the dam of champion Brimmerton and grade 1 winner Gone Celebrating. This is also the family of champion Duponte and Heritage Place Futurity(G1) winner Sunnysyde and Nymeria.
