Fastest Qualifier Cerveza Corona Returns To Win Century Mile Maiden Express

EDMONTON, ALB—JUNE 4, 2021—Fastest qualifier Cerveza Corona broke alertly then kept to the task under jockey Ricardo Moreno to defeat stablemate Hortons Real Deal by half-a-length in the $18,684(US) Century Mile Maiden Express (not black type) on Friday evening at Century Mile Racetrack.

Making only her fourth career start for owner Charles Stojan and trainer William Leech, Cerveza Corona completed the 350 yards in :17:875 seconds, equaling 87 speed index with a 20mph crosswind. She earned $8,408(US) for the effort.

In two starts at 2, the California-bred daughter of leading sire Favorite Cartel was third in the Evergreen Park Challenge and fourth in the Canada Cup QH Futurity(G3). She has earned $19,513.

Stojan paid $25,000 for the filly in the 2019 Los Alamitos Equine Mixed Sale. Oscar Andrade Jr. and Steve Burns, DVM bred Cerveza Corona from the Corona Cartel mare Corona Mas Fina.

Runner-up Hortons Real Deal, a home bred racing for Stojan earned $3,176(US) for second. Also trained by Leech, the son of Hortons Specialissue is out of the FDD Dynasty mare Winkin Dynasty. Winless in four starts, the chestnut colt has earned $5,723. J.B. Botello had the riding call.

Yes Im First, a daughter of leading sire First Moonflash who didn't start as a 2-year-old, finished 1-¼ lengths back to earn $1,868(US) for third. Trainer Laurie Ferguson named Jose Rocha to ride the gray filly for owner Ralph Danard.

Danard purchased Yes Im First's dam, BRT Yes I Can, by Conner Can, for $3,500 at the 2018 Heritage Place Mixed Sale in Oklahoma in-foal champion First Moonflash. Mike Abraham is the breeder.

Northforkhigh, Bdb Mach Man, Favorite Nickers, Bright Ooh La La and Bright Foo Fighter completed the field. Movin Timber and Still Moonshine were scratched.
