Hortons Real Deal Tops Qualifiers to the Alberta Bred Derby at Century Mile

Hortons Real Deal Tops Qualifiers to the Alberta Bred Derby at Century Mile

EDMONTON, AB—SEPTEMBER 3, 2021—Two trials on Friday night at Century Mile determined the field for the $40,602 Alberta Bred Derby; the 400-yard final will be held on September 18.

Hortons Real Deal ($2.50) won the second trial and posted the fastest qualifying time of 20.124. The heavy post-time favorite, with Ricardo Moreno aboard, defeated the field by nearly two lengths and earned an 85 speed index.

Hortons Real Deal is trained by William Leech for owner Charles Stojan. Stojan also bred the colt, by Hortons Specialissue and out of the Fdd Dynasty mare Winkin Dynasty.

The trial victory was the third consecutive win for Hortons Real Deal, including a stake at Grande Prairie in his most recent start. He is three for seven lifetime.

The first trial produced the second and third fastest qualifiers. Eyesa Timber’s winning time of 20.266 was the second fastest overall.

J. Botello rode Eyesa Timber ($3.00) to a half-length victory and earned an 82 speed index. Wes Oulton trains, owns and bred the gelding by leading Canadian sire First Timber out of Eyesa Perry, by Mr Jess Perry.

The talented colt has six career wins in 12 starts with earnings of $74,530.

Last year, he won the Alberta Bred Futurity and the Canada Cup Quarter Horse Futurity (RG3), and qualified to the MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity at Canterbury. As a 3-year-old, he finished second in the Alberta Stallion Stakes Derby and was third in the Adequan Evergreen Park Derby Challenge.

Bright Foo Fighter and Ricardo Moreno finished second to Eyesa Timber as the third fastest qualifier in 20.376.

Bright Foo Fighter is trained by William Leech for the Gonetothebrightside Syndicate. He was bred by Jack and Deborah Williams, by Gone to the Mountain and out of DJ Bright Sweetheart, by Bright Plain.

In ten starts, Bright Foo Fighter has earned $15,670 and has competed in several stakes, including the Adequan Evergreen Park Derby Challenge and the John Deere Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge.
