O First Sweet Heart Fastest from Alberta Bred Futurity (RG3) Trials at Century Mile

O First Sweet Heart Fastest from Alberta Bred Futurity (RG3) Trials at Century Mile

EDMONTON, AB—SEPTEMBER 4, 2021—On Saturday evening at Century Mile, a trio of trials set the field for the $66,926 (CAN) Alberta Bred Futurity (RG3) on September 19. Fastest qualifier O First Sweet Heart led the way with the fastest time of :17.980 for the 350-yard trials.

O First Sweet Heart ($2.60) won the first trial as the heavy post-time favorite by 3 ˝ lengths and earned an 84 speed index. Larris Allen was in the irons for trainer Wesley Oulton and owner Jeffrey Rath. Oulton bred the filly out of Eyesa Perry, by Mr Jess Perry.

O First Sweet Heart is sired by First Timber, who was represented as the sire of four of the ten fastest qualifiers. In addition, two more qualifiers were out of dams sired by First Timber, including third fastest qualifier Wave Burner.

The trial was O First Sweet Heart’s third consecutive win. She won the John Deere Grande Prairie Juvenile Challenge and the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity in het last two starts.

The third trial produced the second and third fastest qualifiers as Destello de Luna defeated Wave Burner by a half-length.

Destello de Luna ($4.10) and Ricardo Moreno gained the lead in mid-stretch and posted a final time of 18.045 with a speed index of 82.

William Leech trains the gelding for Jane Leech and Haley Moreno. He was bred by Ken McFarlane, by Lethal N First and out of A Mere Toast, by Toast to Dash.

In five career starts, Destello de Luna has never finished off the board. He has experience in two previous stakes: a third-place finish in the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity at Century Mile and a runner-up finish in the Sales Stakes Futurity at Grande Prairie.

Wave Burner, with Silvino Morales up, was the third fastest qualifier in 18.145. The Wave Carver gelding is trained by Wesley Oulton for owner Jeffrey Rath. Oulton also bred the 2-year-old out of First Timber mare First Prize Sass, who also qualified to the Alberta Bred Futurity in 2015 and was multiple stakes placed in her career.

Wave Burner’s trial was his first start in his native Alberta after competing in maiden races at Remington and Fair Meadows.
