Fastest Qualifier Hortons Real Deal Prevails In Blanket Finish To Alberta Bred Derby

EDMONTON, ALB—SEPTEMBER 18, 2021—Fastest qualifier Hortons Real Deal prevailed in a blanket-finish to the $31,789(US) Alberta Bred Derby Saturday evening at Century Mile Racetrack.

Crowded leaving the gate under jockey Ricardo Moreno, Hortons Real Deal held off a fast closing Eyesa Timber by a head. Yes Im First was another head back to get third. Hortons Real Deal completed the 400 yards in :20.085 seconds, into a 15 mph crosswind.

Racing for owner-breeder Charles Stojan and trainer William Leech, Hortons Real Deal got his fourth consecutive win and used the $14,304(US) winner's purse to double his earnings total to $28,711. It was the first black type win for the son of Hortons Specialissue from the FDD Dynasty mare Winkin Dynasty.

Wesley T. Oulton's bred-owned and trained Eyesa Timber lacked room early under jockey J.B. Botello and made up lots of ground to earn $5,505(US) for second. The graded stakes winning son of leading Canadian sire First Timber has won six of 13 career starts and banked nearly $80,000. Out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Eyesa Perry, Eyesa Timber won the Canada Cup QH Futurity(G3) and Alberta Bred Futurity last year.

Ralph Danard's Yes Im First picked up $3,179(US) for third. Trainer Laurie Ferguson named jockey Neville Stephenson to ride the daughter of champion sire First Moonflash from the Conner Can mare Brt Yes I Can. Bred by Mike Abraham, Yes Im First has earned $9,119 off six career starts.

Bright Foo Fighter, Timbers Express, Jagnestimber, Ulnvme To, Favorite Nickers, Obsessed Way and Royale Runaway completed the field.
