Destello de Luna Gets Up Late To Win Alberta Bred Futurity(RG3)

EDMONTON, ALB—SEPTEMBER 19, 2021—Second fastest qualifier Destello de Luna flew late under jockey Ricardo Moreno to nip fastest qualifier O First Sweet Heart by a nose at the wire in Sunday's $52,397(US) Alberta Bred Futurity(RG3) at Century Mile Racetrack.

Racing for owners Jane Leech and Haley Moreno, the $4,400 AQHRA Canada QH Cup Yearling Sale graduate completed the 350 yards in :18.167 seconds into a 10 mph crosswind.

Trainer William Leech conditions the son of Lethal N First from the Toast To Dash mare A Mere Toast. Ken McFarlane bred the brown gelding who has compiled a (6)-2-3-1 record and used todays winner's purse valued at $23,589(US) to boost his earnings mark to $37,479.

Destello del Luna was also second in the Sales Stakes Futurity and third in the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity earlier this year.

Runner-up O First Sweet Heart picked up $8,907(US) for her effort. Wesley Oulton trains the First Timber filly for owner Jeffery Rath. Winner of the John Deere Grand Prairie Juvenile Challenge and the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity, O First Sweet Heart was also bred by Oulton from the Mr Jess Perry mare Eyesa Perry. Ridden by jockey Larris Allen, she has banked $52,358 off three wins in eight starts this season.

Oulton also saddled third-place finisher Wave Burner for Rath. The son of world champion Wave Carver finished half-a-length back to earn $5,239(US) for third. Another Oulton-bred, Wave Burner is out of the First Timber mare First Prize Sass. Ridden by Silvino Morales, the gray gelding has earned $9,492 in six starts.

Bringontherush, Bearcat Bill, Obsessed Bug, Top Shelf 109, First Golden Rose and A Verygood Moonshine completed the field.
