Flight Club Soars Home to Win $27,510(US) Canada Cup Quarter Horse Derby at Century Mile

Flight Club Soars Home to Win $27,510(US) Canada Cup Quarter Horse Derby at Century Mile

Flight Club and Ricardo Moreno closed fast over a sloppy track to win the $27,510(US) Canada Cup Quarter Horse Derby, the first race of the Saturday evening card at Century Mile.

The pair pulled away to win by a length with a final time of :20.222 and an 83 speed index.

Flight Club ($6.70) is trained by William Leech for owner Charles Stojan. The Foose colt was bred in California by Steve Burns, DVM, out of the Separatist mare Separate Flight.

Flight Club is four seven lifetime and is now a multiple stakes winner. As a 2-year-old, he won the John Deere Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge and represented the region in the John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship (G2) in Albuquerque.

Royale Runaway edged out Bright Foo Fighter by a nose to finish second with Martin Ortiz aboard. Royale Runaway is a gelded son of First Timber, out of Sparkling Hy, by Hez Choice Property. He was bred in Alberta by Isaak Fehr.

Brant Lazco trains Royale Runaway and co-owns the gelding with Dakota Lazco. He has previously competed in the Canada Cup Quarter Horse Futurity (G3), the Alberta Bred Futurity and the Alberta Bred Derby.

Bright Foo Fighter and Silvino Morales completed the trifecta for trainer William Leech and the Gonetothebrightside Syndicate. The black colt was bred in Alberta by Jack and Deborah Williams, by Gone to the Mountain and out of Dj Bright Sweetheart, by Bright Plain.

Bright Foo Fighter has one win in 12 career starts. Saturday’s finish was his career best placing in a stake, though he has previously qualified to the Alberta Bred Derby and Futurity and competed in the John Deere Juvenile and Adequan Derby Challenge races at Grande Prairie.

Completing the field were Eyesa Timber, Ulnvme To, Timbers Express, Obsessed Way, Cerveza Corona, Jess Be First and Jagnestimber.
