One Sweet Duck Makes A Splash In Wild West Trials

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—OCTOBER 3, 2022— Lex Fabrizio’s homebred filly was as happy as a duck back in the water after posting a runaway victory and the fastest qualifying time to the $96,900 Wild West Futurity on Sunday at Los Alamitos.

Fabrizio’s One Sweet Duck was the star of the Wild West Futurity, as she flew out of the gate in route to a two-length victory in the last of three trials to the 350-yard race. Twenty-one juveniles competed in the trials with the horses with the 10 fastest times returning for the final on Sunday, October 23.

One Sweet Duck began her racing career with two wins at Los Alamitos and was making her first start here since running seventh in the Grade 2 Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity on May 15.

In between the Kindergarten and her Wild West trial win, One Sweet Duck made three starts in the Intermountain region, which including winning a stakes trial at Wyoming and finishing second in a $101,000 final at the Evanston track.

Ridden by Armando Cervantes for trainer Monty Arrossa, One Sweet Duck covered the 350 yards in :17.863. The One Sweet Jess filly out of Los Alamitos stakes winner Duck Dash N Go was picking up her fourth career win in seven starts.

The Wild West Futurity is for 2-year-olds that have raced in the Intermountain and Northwest regions, plus Arizona, Nevada, and Canada.

The first trial went to Vaughn Fisher and Ed McNelis’ Special Gift, the third-place finisher in the Bitterroot Futurity, while the second trial went to Gary Laramie’s Jessica Cruz, who qualified to her third futurity of the year.  

The Cervantes/Arrossa combination teamed up with Special Gift, as the Seperate Interest filly won her trial by a nose over Carolyn and Ralph Fales’ Secret Warning in a time of :18.208. Adrian Loza was aboard Jessica Cruz for trainer Elena Andrade. The FDD Dynasty filly won her trial by ¾ lengths in a time of :18.083.
