BRAZIL—JUNE 21, 2015—Champion millionaire and All American Futurity(G1) winner Corona Cash died today in Brazil due to complications from colic. She was 20-years-old.
Bred by Robert D. “Strawberry Bob” Etchandy of California and raced by Henry Brown of Arizona, the daughter of all-time leading sire First Down Dash, was named the 1997 AQHA Racing Champion 2-Year-Old Filly and the 1998 AQHA Racing Champion 3-Year-Old and 3-Year-Old Filly.
Trained by Donna McArthur, she compiled a race record of (32) 19-7-2 while earning $1,542,880. Among her 11 stakes wins were the All American Futurity(G1), Ed Burke Million Futurity(G1), Governor's Cup Futurity(RG1), Los Alamitos Derby(G1), Governor's Cup Derby(RG1), Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap(G1), Las Damas Handicap(G2), etc. Tami Purcell was her main rider.
Brown sold Corona Cash at the 2011 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale for $230,000 to Guy Peixoto – Rancho Horizonte and Jonatas Dantas – Ana Dantas Ranch of Brazil.
She is also the granddam of several stakes horses including 2015 LQHBA Lassie Futurity(RG2) winner Jessa Louisiana Zoom SI 93 (3 wins in 3 starts, $155,888) and stakes winner Bang For Ur Bux SI 106 (7 wins, $27,989).
Several of Corona Cash's son's are multiple stakes sires including Chilled Corona , One Corona and Heza Fast As Cash.
Corona Cash's dam, Corona Chick was inducted into the AQHA Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in March. Owned since 2001 by Julianna Hawn she was also bred by Bob Etchandy.
Corona Chick was the AQHA Racing Champion 2-Year-Old, Champion 2-year-old Filly and AQHA Racing Champion 3-Year-Old Filly in 1991-92. Compiling a record of (18) 15-2-0 while earning $591,326.
After reigning on the track, Corona Chick birthed a line of fashionably royal heirs, including four stakes winners and earners of $3.6 million. The1997 Broodmare of the Year was pensioned at age 22 and died in June 2013.
Among full siblings to Corona Chick are G1 winner and leading sire Valiant Hero SI 105 ($668,633), stakes winner and multiple stakes sire Corona Czech Si 93 ($125,759), G1-placed stakes sire Mighty Corona SI 99 ($309,216). Half-siblings to Corona Chick include the leading living sire of money earners G1 winner Corona Cartel SI 97 ($557,142), G1-placed multiple stakes sire Captain Courage SI 100 ($213,25), etc.
