LOS ALAMITOS, CA—OCTOBER 3, 2017—The Marfa Lights, the three-year-old colt that was shipped to Los Alamitos Race Course after his fourth-place finish in the All American Derby G1 on September 3, is being readied for a 2018 campaign at this Southern California stronghold of American Quarter Horse racing.

It had previously been announced that the $566,493 earning son of One Famous Eagle would enter stud at Lazy E Ranch in Guthrie, Oklahoma, in 2018.

"He is still coming here to stand, but now it will be in 2019, not 2018," said Lazy Butch Wise of Lazy E.

Mike Robbins, who has won the Champion Of Champions G1 three times and has a solid stables of older stakes horses at Los Alamitos this year, has taken over the training duties of The Marfa Lights for owners Mike and Beth Harper of San Antonio., Texas.

"After going over the horse, I really like his chances here for next year," said Robbins. "There's not a track anywhere that has as many Grade I opportunities for older horses from the Winter Championship in February to the Champion of Champions in December. Additionally, there are significant opportunities at Remington Park, Ruidoso Downs and Albuquerque that we might explore if the opportunity presents itself.

"The Marfa Lights has only started nine times, and he has a lot of run left in him," Robbins said of the horse that was second by a head in the $3 million All American Futurity G1 and fourth in this year's $1.3 million All American Derby G1.

Robbins won the Champion of Champions with World Champions Sgt Pepper Feature, Dashs Dream and Special Leader. He ran third in it in 2016 with Los Alamitos Super Derby G1 winner Big Lew.

Out of the Champion Your First Moon $750,726, The Marfa Lights is a full brother to 2016 Champion Aged Stallion Moonin The Eagle $548,985 and a half-brother to 4-time Champion Moonist $878,468.

"Lazy E Ranch totally supports the decision of the Harpers to keep The Marfa Lights in training at Los Alamitos next year," said Wise. "We're saving a place in the stud barn for him for the 2019 breeding season."
