Multiple Grade 1 Winner and Sire Azoom Dies

WHEELOCK, TX—MARCH 22, 2018—Multiple Grade 1 winner and sire Azoom SI 107 died today from an acute liver disease. He stood for the last five years at Granada Farms near Wheelock, Texas.

"We were deeply honored to have managed Azoom's breeding career during these past 5 years," Granada Farms' General Manager Jimmy Eller said. "Our thanks goes to the Azoom syndicate for allowing us to do so. He was a great champion and will be sorely missed. Also, thanks to Dr. Honnas and Dr. Canada of Texas Equine Hospital for such a valiant effort in attempting to save this great horse's life."

Bred in Texas by Jerry Windham, Azoom was purchased in the 2001 TQHA Yearling Sale and campaigned by Enrique Carrion.

Conditioned in the US by trainer Frank Cavazos and ridden Rodrigo Vallejo, Azoom was a three-time Grade 1 winner.

He started his career in Mexico with four wins from five starts, capped by the victory in the Mexico Juvenile Challenge, which earned him a berth in the Juvenile Challenge Championship at Sam Houston Race Park in the US.

After moving to Sam Houston in June, Azoom won seven of nine starts. He finished a close second in the Grade 2 TQHA Sires Cup Futurity before rattling off six-straight wins that included the Grade 1 Texas Classic Futurity, Sam Houston Futurity and the TQHA Sale Futurity. He was also the fastest qualifier to each of the four futurities he raced in at Sam Houston.

In the final start of his career, Azoom suffered his only off-the-board performance in the AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship after breaking in the air at the start.

Azoom compiled a (14) 11-1-1 record and banked $738,146 as a 2-year-old.

Following a grueling campaign at 2, the decision was made to retire Azoom to stud. He was syndicated and stood at Lazy E Ranch in Guthrie, Oklahoma before moving to Granada Farms.

From 11 crops to reach racing age, Azoom has sired 257 winners, 26 stakes winners, 33 stakes-placed, earners of $7.7 million and average earnings per starter of over $18,400.

His top performers include Zoomin With Ease SI 104 (2 wins to 5, $388,299 Rainbow Futurity-G1, etc.), Grc Justplainazoom SI 104 (4 wins to 7, $220,693 3rd Ruidoso Derby-G1, etc.), Zoomin Away SI 95 (9 wins to 7, $145,383 Ruidoso Juvenile Invitational, etc.), Zoomandkicken SI 103 (7 wins to 6, $139,252 2nd Dash for Cash Derby-G2, etc.), Barackazoom SI 106, (5 wins to 6, $133,829 Farnam S., etc.), Zoomdasher SI 105 (3 wins to 5, $117,583 3rd Golden State Derby-G1, 3rd La Primera Del Ano Derby-G3, etc.), I Azoomed You Knew SI 91 (4 wins to 5, $117,212 West Texas Derby-G3, etc.), Jump Down Azoom SI 103 (5 wins to 7, $115,783 La Plata S.-G3, etc.), Zoomin Express SI 99 (2 wins to 6, $105,601 3rd Sunland Championship Challenge-G2, etc.), etc.

His sire Shazoom SI 102 ($178,606) sired 2 champions,71 stakes winners and earners of more than $24.4 million, including Shining Sky SI 102 (champion, $494,009, Retama Park Futurity-G1, etc.), Lett Her Zoom SI 103 (champion, $309,167, Kansas Futurity-G2, etc.), Bon Accord SI 105 ($821,470, Remington Park Inv. Championship-G1, etc.), etc.

Azoom is out of the *Beduino (TB) mare Crystalinas SI 96, a sister to Grade 1 winner and former leading sire Runaway Winner SI 104 ($369,410). She is the dam of 14 ROM, five black type including Grade 1 winner Azoom SI 107 (see above), Grade 2 winner Vrrroom SI 108, Grade 3 winner Special Crys SI 102 ($95,190), G1-placed Bills Last SI 95 ($371,381) and stakes-placed Crystalin SI 99.
