CLARE, MI—JUNE 6, 2013—Walter G. Bay, co-owner of T-Bill Stables with his wife Carolyn, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013 after battling cancer. He was 75.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 9 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Harrison, MI. A dinner will be held following the service. Reverend Ron Cook of the First Congregational Church of Harrison, MI will be officiating.
Visitation will be held at Stephenson Wyman Funeral Home in Clare, MI on June 7th (Friday), from 6 to 8 pm (CDT), June 8th (Saturday) from 2 to 5 pm and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Stephenson Wyman Funeral Home.
Walter was born at home on August 27th, 1937. He graduated from Clare High School and took additional business courses at Central Michigan University. He married Carolyn (Carter) on December 13, 1960; they were married 52 years.
Walter was Owner/CEO of Tandem Transport Corp., a for-hire motor carrier (trucking company). He never retired and celebrated 42 years of service with Tandem this past March. Walter was also a Board Member of Harrison Lumber Company since 1979 and has served as President since 2003.
Walter was a member of the Michigan Trucking Association and the American Trucking Association working diligently to promote the interests of the trucking industry. He served as an officer of MTA from 1988 to 1993 and held the office of President in 1991 and Chairman in 1992 and 1993. He also served as State Vice President to the ATA from 1996 to 2008. He also served as a member of the Highway Police Committee and Regulatory Committee. Walter was a dedicated Christian and member of the First Congregational Church of Harrison, MI where he also served as a Trustee.
For leisure, Walter enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and assisting his wife Carolyn with her business of breeding and racing horses. This led him to be a member of American Quarter Horse Association and the Great Lakes Quarter Horse Association.
Among the many stakes horses bred by Walter and Carolyn's T-Bill Stables is 2011 AQHA Racing World Champion Cold Cash 123, winner of 13 races, $1,326,665. Other horses included Grade 1-placed Friday 123 ($141,915) and American Paint Horse Association world champion I Do One Two Three. The Bays were also involved in the group that leased Mount Pleasant Meadows in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, and helping to keep it running. The Bays were inducted into the Michigan Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2010.
Walter is survived by his wife Carolyn, two children, Maria (Jeff) Gross and David Bay, and grandchildren, Jackson Gross, Jordan Gross, and Jeffrey J. Gross and other family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Helen Bay.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the First Congregational Church of Harrison, MI or to Carolyn Bay for support of Mid Michigan Community College.
