Corona Cartels Top Strong Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale Opener

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—AUGUST 30, 2014—A pair of Corona Cartel yearlings topped the opening session of the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale as 16 yearlings cracked the six-figure barrier on Friday night.

The opening night average saw a seven percent increase over final numbers last year to $44,387 as compared to $41,480 in 2013. 116 of the 146 offered in the first session sold for a gross of $5,148,900.

Reliance Ranches, LLC paid $300,000 for the sale topper Rip Tide, a Corona Cartel colt out of Little Surfer by First Down Dash. Consigned by Lazy E Ranch, LLC, Agent, the gray colt was originally cataloged as Hip 466 but sold in the sale as on Friday night as Hip 90. He is from the second crop of a stakes winning full sister to world champion Wave Carver and champion Ocean Runaway.

Johnny Trotter purchased Devilwitha Bluedress, a sister to world champion Blues Girls Too, for $200,000. Belle Mere Farms, Ltd., Agent consigned the Corona Cartel filly out of former Broodmare of the Year Run The Dash, by Sixarun.

Dan and Jolene Urschel paid $200,000 for a Walk Thru Fire half-sister to Ruidoso Derby(G1) winner Rock You. Burns Ranch, Agent consigned the sorrel filly out of G1-placed Babe On The Fly, by Strawfly Special.

Reliance Ranches, LLC was the leading buyer in the opening session with five yearlings totaling $800,000. Johnny Trotter had two yearlings $312,000 and M & J Racing purchased three head for $272,000.

Lazy E Ranch, LLC, Agent was the leading consignor and/or agent Friday night with 10 head grossing $922,000. Julianna Hawn Holt had six yearlings bring $393,000 and Burns Ranch, Agent sold seven yearlings totaling $358,500.

Corona Cartel led opening session sale sires (by average with two or more sold) with 13 head for a $107,000 average. Mr Jess Perry saw five head average $75,200, first-sale crop sire Bodacious Dash had two yearlings average $73,500 and Pyc Paint Your Wagon had seven average $64,714.

Other first crop-sale sires with sharp opening night numbers were Louisiana Senator who had three yearlings average $62,333 and American Runaway with two for $49,500.
