Jockey J.R. Valenzuela To Appeal New Mexico Five-Year Ban of Electrical Device

SUNLAND PARK, NM—APRIL 12, 2017—According to an article published Tuesday on the PaulickReport.com Sunland Park's board of stewards have suspended jockey J.R. Valenzuela for five years and fined him $5,000 for his ''involvement'' with a prohibited electrical devise found during a search by New Mexico Racing Commission officials and track security.

Valenzuela's attorney, Johnny Mac Hayes, said he plans to file an appeal on behalf the rider.

The longtime Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse jockey was suspended January 15th after the discovery was made prior to the $95,000 Shue Fly Stakes. The gelding by leading second crop sire Zulu Dragon finished fourth in the race under jockey Sergio Becerra, Jr.
