Actor Powers Boothe – A Friend and Supporter of Quarter Horse Racing - Passes Away

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—MAY 15, 2017—Television and film actor Powers Boothe passed away on Sunday morning at his Los Angeles home. The Emmy Award winning Deadwood and Sin City and Tombstone actor was active in Quarter Horse racing for many years and was a "true ambassador for the Quarter Horse racing industry," said Bud Alessio, the president of the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association.

Powers was an active Board Member of the PCQHRA from 1994 to 2001 and served as the organization’s chief financial officer in 1998. He also served as Vice President of the PCQHRA from 1999 to 2001 and was an active buyer and seller at the PCQHRA sale auctions as well as other sales.

"Powers was a major supporter of the Quarter Horse industry as well as PCQHRA and Los Alamitos Race Course," Alessio added.

Boothe owned and bred the First Down Dash gelding Tango Cash, which ran in the El Primero Del Ano Derby, Dash For Cash Derby and Governor’s Cup Derby in 1993 – all at Los Alamitos. He also owned and bred the winners Honky Tonk Tango and Special Tango. He also raced some horses in partnerships. With John Guiltinan, Jr., Boothe’s horses included Finding More and Shez Torrid. His horses were trained by Charlie Bloomquist and Bob Gilbert plus a few other trainers.

"Powers Boothe was such a nice man," Shirley Schvaneveldt said. "He had the box seats right behind us at Los Alamitos. Blane would always talk to him. He was always nice." "Powers Boothe came to many PCQHRA banquets," added Ed Burgart, the voice of Los Alamitos Race Course. "He was always so accessible."
