LQHBA Scholarship Presentations Set for Saturday's at Harrah's Louisiana Downs

BOSSIER CITY, LA--MARCH 12, 2018--An exceptional afternoon of racing is on tap Saturday at Harrah's Louisiana Downs with the $15,000 Streakin La Jolla, the $87,506 Mardi Gras Derby and a record purse of $310,466 set for this year's Mardi Gras Futurity (RG2) (see related story).

First post is at 1:00 p.m. (CDT)

Breeding and racing are certainly top priorities for the Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association (LQHBA), but one very important goal of the association is to promote education for Louisiana youth.

Since 2001, the LQHBA scholarship program has granted over $500,000 for students attending a higher education institution. In the continuing tradition of combining recognition of youth on big race days, two students will be awarded $1,500 scholarships on Saturday at Louisiana Downs.

Applicants must register in person between noon and 2:00 p.m. (CST) on race day (Saturday, March 17, 2018). A registration table will be located inside the main entrance of the racetrack next to the program stand. Participant/entrant must be a Louisiana High School Graduate or a student who is graduating from a Louisiana High School in 2018 and will attend a higher education institution in the calendar year of 2018.

The scholarship is limited to the cost of tuition, books (electronic or printed) and required electronic study materials only, and payment will be made directly from LQHBA to the institution that the recipient attends.

LQHBA and Harrah's Louisiana Downs have joined forces to lend their support to the Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Shreveport and will present a check for $3,000 after Saturday's third race.

Since 1922, the esteemed health care center has provided high-quality medical care to children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, cleft lip and palate, regardless of the families' ability to pay.

"Our board of directors and association members take great pride in helping organizations that serve our community as well as furthering the education of Louisiana students," said Tony Patterson, executive director of the Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association.

"We thank Louisiana Downs for their support on the donation to the Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Shreveport and look forward to awarding two scholarships on Saturday afternoon."
