Funeral Services Today For Longtime Trainer Rodney Reed - UPDATED

TISHOMINGO, OK—APRIL 26, 2018—Funeral services have been set today (Thursday) for J. Rodney Reed, 62, a longtime Quarter Horse trainer. Reed passed away on Monday at the Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.

Services will be conducted at 1 pm (CDT) at the Chickasaw Community Center located on 818 E 6th Street in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. Interment will follow in the Condon Grove Cemetery in Milburn, Oklahoma. The family received visitors at the same location Wednesday evening.

Rodney Reed was born on March 28, 1956 in Durant, Oklahoma to J. W. Reed and Alma Wanet (Hurt) Reed. He grew up in Wapamucka, Oklahoma and graduated from high school there in 1974.

Rodney married Sheila Dunn on November 18, 1977 in Milburn, Oklahoma.

He was a Horse Trainer all of his life and had owned and operated the Reed Training Stables for many years.

According to the American Quarter Horse Association, Reed won 1,764 races in his career with total earnings of more than $17.8 million. His major stakes wins included the Rainbow Futurity and Kansas Futurity at Ruidoso Down; the Heritage Place Futurity 3 times; Remington Park Futurity twice; the Blue Ribbon Futurity and Derby 6 times each; and the Speedhorse Futurity 4 times.

Among stakes winners he saddled were the likes of Alamitos Dasher, Bugged Thoughts, Chicks Call Me, Clicken On, De Passem Okey, Endaleabull, Fast Del Rey, Fast First Prize, Feature Mr Jess, First Down Kelly, Frostys Money Man, Heza Fast Dash, Jazzy Corona, Jess A Feature, Le Magnifique Fg, Phoebes Otoole, Pure Oklahoma, Quick Coverage, Rakin In The Cash, Regard Watah, Sheza Neon Rose, Spanish Boot, Spit Like Jagger, and many, many more.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Joey Reed.

Rodney is survived by his wife Sheila of the home; his son, Brandon Reed of Wynnewood, Oklahoma; his daughter, Rendy Reed of Wapanucka; his sister, Cindy Miller and husband Jim and their children, Amy Toney and her sons, Jett, Jud, and Jay and Travis Miller and his children, Haley and Blane; and his sister, Robyn Thomas and her husband Mark of Coalgate, Oklahoma and their daughter Tatum; three grandchildren, Racee Reed, Rhet Packer and Ryder Zayas; numerous other relatives and a host of friends.
