Longtime Jockey And Trainer Danny Mitchell Passes Away At Age 66

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—JULY 17, 2018—Danny Mitchell, a long time jockey and horse trainer for both Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds in Southern California, passed away on Sunday morning. Danny resided in Bradbury, California at the time of his passing. He was 66.

As a Quarter Horse jockey, Danny enjoyed a great career, winning 563 races at Los Alamitos to currently rank 31st all-time at the Orange County track. He also enjoyed success as a trainer, saddling 97 Quarter Horse winners, including seven stakes winners. His best trainee was Cathy Monji’s Dicey Secret, the dam of 2006 All American Futurity winner No Secrets Here.

Under Danny’s tutelage, Dicey Secret was a three-time derby winner in 1995 and won seven of nine stakes trials in her career, while racing in an era that also including the great champion filly Ah Sigh. Dicey Secret won the California Sires Cup Derby, Governor’s Cup Derby, and PCQHRA Breeders Derby. The daughter of Raise A Secret won 12 of 21 starts.

When legendary Quarter Horse jockey Steve Treasure, who Danny rode against for many years, earned his 100th stakes victory back on July 12, 1995, he accomplished the feat aboard the Mitchell-trained Beduinos Lark in the Santa Maria Handicap.

Danny Mitchell is survived by his wife, Veronica (Charlie) Stucki; daughter, Brandy Mitchell; son, John Yoho; sister, Ramona Aguilar; plus many nieces and nephews. The family will be having a private memorial service in Fallbrook, California in the near future.
