Youth Enjoy Learning About Racing In Indiana

SHELBYVILLE, IN—JULY 18, 2018—On June 30, 2018, the Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana held its Youth Racing Experience at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino in Shelbyville, Indiana.

There were 10 youth signed up for the program and it was another day filled with the same type of program provided at the National Youth Racing Experience, held at the Challenge Championships.

"Everyone at the track helped us with speakers and we visited the race office, gates, track vet, jockey quarters, etc.," said Vickie Duke. "Our speakers also included the head of marketing for the track, Tammy Knox, who is an excellent writer and marketing exec. We discussed all of the job opportunities available.

"The youth were given the chance to ask lots of questions. It was a very good day and we are always impressed with how younger people that are into horses represent themselves."

The winner was 17-year-old Sarah Schwieterman of Portland, Indiana.

Sarah participated in the AQHA Young Horse Development Program, 4H, FFA, has worked at a vet clinic as an animal caretaker, on a horse farm to help halter break foals and get them show ready, at a fairgrounds getting things show ready, and also volunteers at a nursing home through the Catholic Youth Organization, worked in childcare and on a farm.

Second place went to 16-year-old Gabi Paxson of Pennville, Indiana.
