Sorocaba Quarter Horse Clean Sport Is Success, Marks Important Step Towards Animal Welfare

SOROCABA, SP BRZ—SEPTEMBER 20, 2018—About 130 people, including breeders, owners, trainers, veterinarians, and students of veterinary medicine participated in the "Quarter Horse Clean Sport" Lecture at the Sorocaba Jockey Club in Sorocaba, San Paulo last month.

The lecture is an initiative of the Jockey Club to publicize the importance of good animal health practices and marks its partnership with Dr. Thomas Wolff, who will be responsible for the veterinary procedures to be implemented at the racecourse.

Opening

After the reception cocktail, Mr. Mauro Eli Zaborowsky, President of the Jockey Club of Sorocaba, opened the event presenting the innovations that have been implemented by the track administration. He began by stressing the correctness of the accounts and a series of measures to reduce costs in racing, the creation of the JCS Mixed Sale Auction that had its first event in July of this year and will be held annually in the GP Foal of the Future final, increasing revenue of the Jockey Club.

Then he spoke about recent improvements made by the Jockey Club. He emphasized the union of the board and the collegiate decisions, and the creation of the group "Futuros Líderes" - composed by the young owners: Marcos Zaborowsky, Érico Braga, Ralph Terra, Izana Dalmolin, Pedro Barbizan, Daniel Aidar, Tiago Dollo and Mariana Jubran, who represent the renewal and future of the board.

Mauro also pointed out the greater integration of the Jockey Club with ABQM and took the opportunity to announce the association will add R $ 100,000.00 to the GP Foal of the Future award as of 2019. The track's interaction is also greater with AQHA, with the registration of animals and campaigns by the American Quarter Horse Association and the presence of American breeders in the races in Sorocaba.

Dr. Thomas Wolff

Mauro then gave the floor to the afternoon speaker, Dr Thomas Wolff, who brought more news. After a brief presentation of his professional experience, the representative of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) in Brazil commented on his first impressions of the Jockey Club of Sorocaba, congratulating the cleaning of the equestrian village, general organization of the racecourse, and the enthusiasm of the board in Jockey reference in health and animal welfare.

He began the lecture explaining the importance of healthy practices and which way to go to reach the welfare of the main "artist": the horse. According to him, the key word for this path to be covered is: professionalism. And only with him will we have animals competing on equal terms, so that he always wins the best horse / jockey set.

He stressed the importance of protecting the animal, and the customers: owners and bettors.

According to Wolff, from this, a virtuous circle can be created: good practice leads to greater credibility, which consequently will attract more audiences, more bettors, more investments to Jockey and greater encouragement to creation.

Dr. Wolff then spoke about the implementation of the Project Quarter Horse Clean Sport, which has the support of all Jockey Club's owners. They are short, medium and long-term actions.

The short-term ones, which are already viable, are aimed at protecting the animals of the Jockey, such as greater control of the flow of animals through chipping and mandatory documentation, follow-up of entry and exit, establishment of hours of Vila Hípica, partnership with laboratory for examinations, partnership with national and international anti-doping laboratories, periodic water analysis, as well as the construction of a mackerel.

Other medium-term points are routine procedures, such as the identification and clinical examination of the animals enrolled in the races and also during the paddock, control of the braking, remodeling of the insulated stables, endoscopy.

In the long term, the project also has support actions, such as the creation of the Veterinary Division of the Jockey Club of Sorocaba (DVJCS), implementation of veterinary and ambulance during the working hours of the stingray, appropriate place for necropsy, redondel for dressage, swimming pool and renovation of paddock stables.

For the continuity of the 100% anti-doping project, the Jockey Club of Sorocaba will follow the same FEI basis of prohibited substances.

With the message: "we, rational humans, have a duty to preserve equine stock with healthy best practices," Dr. Thomas concluded his presentation by extolling this initiative of the Sorocaba Jockey Club as a beautiful work of awareness in which all has to win, benefiting the whole Quarter Horse community and those in love with the horse.
