CLAREMORE, OK—OCTOBER 27, 2025—Grade 1-placed Jess A Good Angel topped the afternoon's trial races for the $366,030 Black Gold Futurity Championship (RG3) on Monday at Will Rogers Downs, stopping the timer in 19.626 seconds over a fast track to secure the top qualifying spot for the November 11 final.
The 400-yard trials featured Oklahoma-bred 2-year-old colts and geldings sired by participating stallions, with the ten fastest times earning berths into the lucrative final. Seven trials were contested, highlighted by standout performances from Jess A Good Angel, Famous N Relentless, and Effortless Favorite.
Jess A Good Angel, a son of champion Jess Good Candy out of Sin Tachas Angel by Pyc Paint Your Wagon, broke in slightly but quickly accelerated to take command, drawing off to a three-quarter-length victory under Juan Pulido.
The homebred colt races for and is trained by Samuel Mendoza and was bred in Oklahoma by Cristian Alcala. His trial clocking of 19.626 earned a 102 speed index—the fastest of all 2025 qualifiers.
The lightly raced colt was making his first start since finishing third in the $1,161,010 Heritage Place Futurity(G1) on May 31. A winner of two of four starts, he has earned $150,957.
Runner-up in that same trial, Famous N Relentless, posted the second-fastest time of the evening with 19.736 seconds, a 98 speed index. The Oklahoma-bred gelding by Hes Relentless out of Tritoon by Tres Seis is owned by Tom Maher and Amber Olmstead, trained by Jason L. Olmstead, and ridden by Ramiro Haro Garcia.
Maher also bred the gelding, who has won five of eight starts, including the Remington Park Juvenile Stakes in April. He has banked $100,461.
The third-fastest qualifier, Heritage Place Futurity(G1) winner Effortless Favorite, prevailed in the eighth trial, dueling gamely with stablemate Uncle Redheads before prevailing by a neck in in:19.860 seconds, good for a 95 speed index.
The bay gelding is by leading sire Favorite Cartel out of Swingin Cartel by Corona Cartel and has won six of seven career starts and earned $457,808. Also, the 2025 All American Juvenile Stakes winner, he races for Tom Maher, Richard L. Tobin, and Bill Maher, and was bred in Oklahoma by Wallace Johnson.
Jason L. Olmstead trains the $67,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale purchase, with Francisco Raul Ramirez Jr. aboard for the win.
Those three runners lead a competitive field of ten into the November 11 final, offering a $366,030 purse for juveniles contesting 400 yards.
