One Famous Icon Gets Track Record In AQRA-Turf Paradise Open QH Derby Win

PHOENIX, AZ—DECEMBER 22, 2019—Fastest Qualifier One Famous Icon returned on Sunday to defeat Cartel Rocks by three-quarters in the $35,200 AQRA-Turf Paradise Open Quarter Horse Derby, setting a new 400 yard track record Sunday afternoon at Turf Paradise.

Under jockey Mark Jasso, One Famous Icon took the lead at the break then held well to complete the 400 yards in :19.484 seconds, equaling a 99-speed index into a 7 mph crosswind. The previous record of :19.492 seconds was established December 10, 2017 by May Be Fantastic SA.

Trainer Rogoberto Guillen saddled the full brother to leading Quarter Horse sire One Famous Eagle for owner Yuriana Ramirez. It was the fourth win in 14 career starts for the Texas-bred 3-year-old and the $16,720 winner's purse boosted his bankroll to $46,890.

Former AQHA President Johnny Trotter bred the son of Mr Jess Perry from the Chicks Beduino mare One Famous Lady. One Famous Icon was also third in the AQRA President's Fall Derby in November.

San Gregorio Racing Stable, Inc.'s California-bred Cartel Rock earned $6,688 for his second-place effort. Danny Montes trains and Ruben Castro had the riding call aboard the Five Bar Cartel gelding out of Snow Rock by This Snow Is Royal. Stepping up after finishing second for a $10,000 tag at Los Alamitos Race Course, Cartel Rocks won his trial derby trial on December 1. He has earned $14,018 off a (5) 2-2-0 record this season. He was unraced at 2.

Multiple stakes winner First Lady Perry finished a nose back in third to earn $3,344 for owner Scott McDaniel. John Allred conditions the Utah-bred daughter of leading sire Mr Jess Perry from the Grade 1 producing Heza Fast Man mare First Lady Amber.

Bred by McColee Land & Livestock LLC, First Lady Perry won the AQRA Turf Paradise Futurity, Rillito Park Foundation Stakes, and was second in the QRA President's Open Spring Derby and Robert Huebeck Stakes. She has banked more than $65,000.
