RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—SEPTEMBER 4, 2020—In the $20,0000 Bill Reed Memorial Stake contested at 870 yards, Wascallywittlewabbit held off a late charge by Why Buy The Cow and hit the wire first with a time of :44.672 after leading the entire race.

The race-time favorite paid $4.40 to win on a clear day with no wind and fast track conditions.

Owned by Rogers Farms/Jarett Case et al, the black gelding by Heza Motor Scooter out of Rabbits N Diamonds by Rabbits Rainbow, was bred in New Mexico by Mike Weatherly. Wascallywittlewabbit is trained by Mike Joiner and was ridden today by Benito Baca.

“I’ve never seen a rabbit faster than him,” said Baca. “He’s getting better with every race. My job was just to get him out front, and he did the rest.”

Wascallywittlewabbit won the $50,000 the Zia 870 Championship here at Ruidoso Downs on July 20th. Baca was aboard for that victory as well.

Runner-up Why Buy The Cow races for owner Carrol Durbin and trainer Simon Buechler. Esgar Ramirez rode the 5-year-oldl Heza Motor Scooter gelding out of Southwest Treasure by Celadon. Bred by Mike Weatherly, the bay gelding picked up $4,000 to bring his earnings to $168,921.

Victor Diaz' Dan The Flashman earned $2,000 for third. Trainer Juan Gonzalez named Jose Ortiz to ride the First Moonflash 5-year-old out of Domeinitchy (TB), by Dome (TB). Bred by Dosi and Norma Alvarez, Dan The Flashamn has banked $125,258.

Executive Trust, Secular Nation (TB) and Coastal Confessions completed the field.

On Monday, the racing season at Ruidoso Downs concludes with the running of the $3 Million GI All American Futurity, the world’s richest Quarter Horse race, the $200,000 All American Juvenile, and the $20,000 Governor’s Handicap. The Cowboy Channel will broadcast the All American Futurity and the All American Juvenile live from Ruidoso Downs from 4:00-5:30 PM MDT.
