Quarter Swan (#1) wins a blanket-finish Sunday at Century Mile Racetrack to set the fastest qualifying time for the $28,370(CAN)Alberta Bred Derby.

Quarter Swan Top Qualifier For Alberta Bred Derby

ROCKY VIEW COUNTY, ALB—SEPTEMBER 13, 2020—Graded stakes-placed Quarter Sawn led wire-to-wire while defeating Double Cruise by a nose in the second of two trials Sunday night for the Alberta Bred Derby at Century Mile Racetrack.

The son of leading Canadian sire First Timber posted the top qualifying mark of :20.577 seconds into a 15 mph crosswind.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to Century Mile Racetrack on Sunday, September 27th to vie for the winner's share of $28,370(CAN) purse in the 400 yards Alberta Bred Derby final.

Ridden by jockey Jose Rocha, Quarter Swan scored his fourth career win in 12 starts and boosted his earnings mark to $25,598.

Owned and trained by Wesley Oulton, Quarter Swan was bred by the Eaves Horses Family Limited Partnership from the Separatist mare Starlite Delight. Last year he was third in the Alberta Bred Futurity(RG3) and a finalist to the Canada QH Cup Futurity(RG3) and Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity.

The top four qualifiers came out of the opening trial including second fastest qualifier Double Cruise, a stakes winning son of Bd Cruiser. Jockey Martin Ortiz rode the sorrel gelding to a :20.586 clocking.

Racing for owner-breeder and trainer Tom Kenway, Double Cruise won the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity last year at Century Mile. Out of the Eye Take Time mare Eye Cruise, he has earned $31,542.

Poutn And Streakin was a half-length winner, under jockey Amador Hernandez, in the opening trial to post the fifth fastest time of :20.662 seconds, an 87 speed index into a 15 mph crosswind.

Owned-and-trained by Charles Butch McDonald, the son of multiple stake sire Its All About Speed has won two of nine career starts and earned $10,036. Pete Schoeler bred Poutn And Streakin from the Okey Dokey Dale mare Poutnlori.

First Timber led all sires with four finalists and Its All About Speed sired two qualifiers. Trainer Wesley Oulton is the owner-breeder of two finalist as well as the owner of the fastest qualifier.
