Sweet Candy Jewel Sets Top Mark In Black Gold

CLAREMORE, OK—OCTOBER 25, 2020—Jose Guzeman's Sweet Candy Jewel defeated Cindydoesitagain by a neck in the last of six trials contested Sunday for the Black Gold Lassies Championship Futurity at Will Rogers Downs.

Ridden by jockey Juan Pulido, the daughter of champion and first-crop sire Jess Good Candy stopped the clock in :20.040 seconds, a 92 speed index for 400 yards with a 5 mph tailwind, to establish the top qualifying mark.

The 2020 Black Gold Futurity program has been split into two divisions this year, one a 400 yard championship race for fillies and the other 400 yard championship race for colts & geldings.

The other nine-fastest qualifying fillies from today will join Sweet Candy Jewel in the 400 yard $229,800 final on Saturday, November 14th at Will Rogers Downs.

Conditioned by trainer Edelmiro Carrizales, Sweet Candy Jewel posted her second win in five starts this season for owner Jose Guzman. She also won a trial for the Old South Futurity at Delta Downs.

Out of the Tac It Like A Man mare Made To Dash, Sweet Candy Jewel was purchased by Guzman for $15,000 at the 2019 Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City. Randy Davis is the breeder.

Runner-up to the fastest qualifier, CIndydoesitagain held on for the third fastest time of :20.061 seconds. Trainer Eddie D. Willis trains the RG2-placed daughter of Capo de Capi for owner-breeder Abel Flores. Jimmy Brooks rode the Oklahoma-bred filly out of Easydoesitcindy by Scrutinizer. She has earned $57,115 this season.

Summer Hill Farm LLC's homebred Paint Me Tres was an impressive one-length gate-to-wire in the second to get the second fastest time of :20.048 seconds, a 92 speed with no wind.

Trainer Clinton Crawford named Jorge Torres to ride the daughter of champion sire Tres Seis from the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Paint Me Anywhere. The lightly raced filly has won three of four career starts, suffering her only loss when she was fourth in a troubled start in the $100,000 Rainbow Juvenile at Ruidoso Downs in July.
