Double Cruise Sails Home In Canada Cup Derby at Century Mile

EDMONTON, AB—OCTOBER 25, 2020—In the second half of a late double of Quarter Horse stakes, Double Cruise won the $22,780(US) Canada Cup Derby on Sunday night at Century Mile.

Double Cruise and jockey Martin Ortiz covered the 400-yard event in :20.305 and earned a 96 speed index. He finished three-quarters of a length ahead of Getit Foose and D. Benitez, with Suits and J.B. Botello behind in third place.

Double Cruise ($11.30) is owned, trained and bred by Tom Kenway in Alberta. He is sired by Bd Cruiser and is out of Eye Cruise, by Eye Take Time.

The gelding has four career wins in 11 starts with over $53,000 in earnings. This was his third stakes victory; he won the Alberta Bred Derby in his previous start and he won the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity early in his career. In addition, he was second in the Alberta Stallion Stakes Derby and was third in the John Deere Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge.

Post-time favorite Getit Foose is trained by William Leech for owner Charles Stojan. He was bred in California by Martha Wells, by Foose and out of Getit Together, by Separatist. He is a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Getit Hot, a qualifier to the 2020 ARC Distaff Challenge Championship (G1).

Getit Foose earned his first career stakes placing in Sunday’s Derby; in his only previous stakes appearance, he finished fourth in the Adequan Evergreen Park Derby Challenge. He spent his 2-year-old year at Los Alamitos before completing a 3-year-old campaign in Canada. He has three wins in 12 starts with $21,717 earned.

Suits is owned, trained and bred by Wesley Oulton in Alberta, by First Timber and out of Burners Beauty, by El Rey Burner.

The gelding has earned $35,732 in 16 races and is multiple stakes placed. Most recently, he was second in the Alberta Bred Derby, and as a 2-year-old, he was third in the Canada Cup Futurity (G3), second in the Alberta Bred Futurity (RG3), and fourth in the John Deere Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge.

Completing the field were Rj Fly Bye, First Pulse, Ss Frosty, Tee for Teller, Poutn and Streakin, Movin Timber and Timbergold.
