Wascallywittlewabbit Wire-To-Wire Winner in Grade 1 Cox Ranch Distance Challenge Championship

Wascallywittlewabbit Wire-To-Wire Winner in Grade 1 Cox Ranch Distance Challenge Championship

Q-RACING—OCTOBER 23, 2021—Rogers Farms' Wascallywittlewabbit led at every call en route to a 2 3/4-length victory in Saturday's $104,500 Cox Ranch Distance Challenge Championship (G1) at Albuquerque Downs.

Prepped by Mike Joiner and ridden by Benito Baca, Wascallywittlewabbit went 870 yards in :44.505. The 6-year-old Heza Motor Scooter gelding earned a 97 speed index and $50,160 from his sixth career stakes win.

Wascallywittlewabbit was coming off of a second-place finish, 1 1/2 lengths behind winner and reigning distance champion Madewell, in the September 18, $56,000 Cox Ranch Albuquerque Distance Challenge (G3). The gelding was bred in New Mexico by Mike Weatherly.

Wascallywittlewabbit has won 11 of 22 starts and has banked $282,100. His 10 wins in 16 outs at the 870-yard distance include this year's Remington Distance Championship (G1) and Pauls Valley Stakes (G2), both at Remington Park.

Madewell, the 7-5 favorite in the field of eight, ran second for owner-breeders Ray and Davy Madewell. Bernard Baca trains named Maria Baca to ride last year's Cox Ranch Distance Challenge Championship (G1) winner.

On October 18th, the son of Jess Jones defeated Wascallywittlewabbit to pickup his berth for the championship final. Out of the Streak Of Cash mare Streakin Peacock, Madewell picked up $21,423 for second, pushing his career mark to $333,472.

Viva Le Don's three-race win streak ended with a third-place finish for the Texas-bred son of Rock Solid Jess from the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Viva Arriba. Racing for owner Rocking J Running Horses and trainer Tammy Kay Johnson, Viva Le Don earned $10,450 for third. Josh Romero rode the $484,506 money earner bred by Johnson and Jack Manning.

Ms Esther, Dance The Dust Off, Faster Than Hasta, and Nicos First Cartel completed the field.
