Hs Golden Eagle Prevails in $100,000 Restricted Grade 3 Jimmy Drake Stakes at SunRay Park Sunday

FARMINGTON, NM–MAY 15, 2022–Hs Golden Eagle, under jockey Carlos Guillen, held off a fast closing Bigg Dee to win the $100,000 restricted Grade 3 Jimmy Drake Stakes Sunday afternoon at SunRay Park. Stakes winner Cowboy Zulu was another neck back in a blanket-finish to take third.

The 3-year-old filly completed the 400 yard course in a quick :19.589 clocking, equaling a 103 speed index into a 5 mph crosswind. It was the third career win in 11 starts for the daughter of multiple stakes sire Osbaldo. The $60,000 winner’s purse boosted Hs Golden Eagle’s earnings total to $301,048.

Armando Alamos conditions the New Mexico-bred filly for owner Lucina Salas Lopez. Hubaldo Solis bred Hs Golden Eagle from the Super Special thoroughbred mare Catcherain.

After a rought start, multiple graded stakes winner Bigg Dee earned $20,000 for this second-place effort. Trainer James J. Gonzales III saddled the son of leading New Mexico sire Big Daddy Cartel for owner Rex Wells. 

Bred by MJ Farms, from the Woodbridge mare Miss Woody Dee, Bigg Dee has banked over $447,000 off nine wins in 19 starts. Mario Delgado had the riding call.

Racing for owners Fred Danley and Chuck Sonnenberg, Cowboy Zulu picked up $10,000 for third. Also bred-and-trained by Danley, Cowboy Zulu is a 3-year-old son of multiple stakes sire Zulu Dragon from the First Moonflash mare First Cowgirl Flash. 

Winner of the New Mexico Classic QH Juvenile last year, Cowboy Zulu has earned $117,855. Agustin Silva was up.

A Flashin Blue, Ez On My Mind, Mr Yin Yang, Fly On Down, Blazinberryberryfast, El Tarasco 727 and Holland Rock completed the field.
